Old version of Quicken does not recognize networked printer

Good day, and thanks in advance for any assistance.

I am using Quicken 2000 Deluxe (yep, 2000) and I recently had a need to network my HP printer. Quicken does not recognize the printer.

The setup is this -

  1. I run Quicken on a Dell laptop running Microsoft XP for the OS. From this machine, I can "see" the printer on the network. I can print from other applications (Word, Notepad and a couple of specialized applications) from this computer to the networked printer.

  1. The printer is connected (via parallel port) to an old Sony Vaio, also running XP. I can print to this printer from both the Dell machine and the Sony machine.

  2. The printer itself is a Hewlett-Packard 5P with lots of life left in it. Has been trouble-free since I bought it.

Does anyone have any thoughts about why Quicken can't seem to use the networked printer? Or is the version simply too old to play with any sort of networking?

Any assistance and guru-style tricks are appreciated. Thank you.

Older versions of Quicken seem to work (only???) with the printer that is set to be the default printer as set on the computer that Quicken is running on. FWIW, I can print from Quicken 2008 DL (US) on this laptop to the printer off the parallel port on my upstairs desktop (whether the laptop is wired or wireless).

Hi, Han -

Thanks for your post. I did verify that the installed printer is selected as the default printer for both machines and I shut both machines down and rebooted them, just in case there was some other problem somewhere.

Still can't print, though, and am starting to think that it's finally time to upgrade. Does anyone know if I can go to Q Basic (in a release after

2000) from Q Deluxe 2000? I just don't need all the stuff, both useable and not, that the latest editions offer.

Thank you all again.

I missed that you previously already said Q2000. I think that version was incapable of these fancy things like printing on a printer connected to a networked computer.

Examine to see what current version might be best for you. Personally I am not yet comfortable with putting all my data on a website, which would mean Q Deluxe is the cheapest.

However, the next cheaper solution is to get the older version, Q 2008 deluxe, somewhere, although at the moment my quicky search didn't find it for much less than Q2009 deluxe.

Stay away from starter edition, that is a teaser package that can't do much for very long.

Thank you. Yep, it's 2000. That's just me being cheap! I'll start looking around for a recent version after I check the comparisons at the Quicken Web site that you suggested.

Many thanks to you for your assistance.

Good luck, Steve. Just remember, sometimes just getting the latest version is the cheapest in the long run.

Hi -

I looked around for older versions, but for the price difference, the time spent shopping and hopefully less fiddling around, I got Q2009 Deluxe. Probably needed to anyway, though I never used Q2000 Deluxe to the fullest. I'll never use Q2009 to it's fullest, but at least I have the doo-dads if I need them.

Thanks - this also solved the printer problem. Only problem was that Quicken couldn't figure out the starting number of my checks. It wanted to use a number that was nine numbers higher than the real starting number. I hope this in not indicative of future problems. I reset the starting number and am hoping that's all I need to do.
