Combining two separate files

Can anyone direct me to instructions for combining two separate AT&T accounts? I am using Quicken 2008 Deluxe. Sorry, but I just can't find them.

Highlight all transactions in account 1, right lick and choose move. Then select the other account. Try with 1 transaction first, and for crying out loud make at least 2 backups before doing anything!

IF I understand the OP, she was talking about two separate Quicken files. BUT, but, but, Quicken allows only one FILE to be open at any one time. Is there a solution for that problem?

That is a much thornier problem. Combining data from 2 separate file sets used to be possible via qif export/import, but that has been made impractical by Intuit's desire to protect copyrights or some such. In addition, if in fileset 1 an account included transfers between accounts, it was always difficult to recreate those in a fileset that didn't have already all those accounts. There is a large number of (old) discussions about that.

So if Sylvia and Joe want to combine their ATT accounts from separate Quicken file sets, I would advise to just make entries in each file set that the account balance (or whatever) has been transferred, by entering a dummy transaction that corrects the balances.

More data need to be known here to really advise Sylvia. Are these telephone accounts or security accounts?

Thanks, Han. The AT&T accounts are stock accounts going back to the early 90's. I agreed to let them combine the two accounts at the beginning of the year and I don't know if I can download them from their site, but I don't think so. I would like to have the gains/losses preserved for future use. Thank you.

Sylvia, if these 2 ATT accounts are in the same file set in your Quicken database (a Quicken "file" is really a set of files comprising data for a database program), then I thought it was easy to move the data using the select, rightclick and choose move scenario I mentioned before. However, checking in an investment account now, "move" is not among the choices there. However, "cut" and "copy" are among the choices in my Quicken DL

2008 (US). I would try those actions (USING A COPY OF the fileset you intend to use, so you don't destroy the original data).

Please let us know how you make out with the problem.

If you have holdings of at&t stock in two different real-world accounts, and have been tracking them in two different Quicken accounts in the same Quicken "file" ... use the "Shares transferred between accounts" investment transaction to "move" your shares from one Quicken account to the other.

Thanks, John. Don't know what I am doing wrong but I cannot get the move, copy or cut to work. When I click them, nothing happens. So far, I created a new account to enter the transactions from statement of the combined account and will hide the other two accounts until I have this problem worked out. Thanks everyone for your help.

To move a transaction from one investment account to another:

- Highlight the transaction

- Do Edit | Transaction | Cut transaction(s).

- Go to the destination register.

- Do Edit | Transaction | Paste transaction(s).

Unfortunately, I believe it is necessary to do this for each transaction. Selecting multiple transactions does not work in an investment account. Thanks, Intuit.

And as previously noted, you can't import an exported QIF file into an investment or banking account. Thanks again, Intuit.

I just needed to move a bunch of transactions. I will post separately about how I did it.

Thanks everyone for your help. I finally used the "Shares transferred between accounts" and everything seems to match up just fine. Again, thanks very much.
