Imopt Q 2008 data

I understand that Q 2008 uses a different file format than the current version and @ starter edition will not import it. I there any trick that will let me do this? I really have no need for the more expensive version.

Thanks... Bob

The Starter Edition was designed to be used for first time users. It was not designed to import/convert existing Q files.

If you are currently using 2008 why not wait until they no longer support your version...that won't happen for at least another year.

For some reason, three different newsgroup servers failed to download the original post in this thread, despite the fact that it was posted today. Oh well. So I'm hanging my reply on yours, Laura, though addressing all my comments to the op; sorry about that.

I think you are being penny wise and pound foolish. The price difference between Starter Edition and Deluxe is $10 at worst. Ten dollars a year is an insignificant price to pay for a useful piece of software; and if you are like others who upgrade only every two or three years, the additional cost becomes truly meaningless at $5 or $3+ per year.

Having said that - and guessing that you are asking about upgrading from Q2008 to Q2009: Q2009 Starter Edition can convert files created by Q2008 Starter Edition (and only Q2008 Starter Edition). Q2009 Starter Edition is the first, and only, "starter edition" to be able to convert files from any other Quicken version.

The difference I have seen has been $30, $29.99-$59.99. Am I missing something?

Why should I be forced to buy a more advanced version giving me features that I will not use? Can you tell me of another company that does this? Or for that matter another company that has Quicken's discount (none) for existing customers that upgrade to a newer version?

Hi, Bob.

Nobody is forcing you to do anything. Intuit offers this product for this price. If you don't want it, don't buy it.

As for hav>>> I understand that Q 2008 uses a different file format than the current

If it were really good old free enterprise I would have an alternative but lets not argue. I bought Q Deluxe 2009 today, is 2009 the current version?

Yes, 2009 is the current version.

BTW, you do have alternatives. One is GnuCash. Totally free and open source software that works on Linux and Windows. Maybe even Mac. The only problem with free & open source is that the program lacks some features normally found in a pay software. I guess you get what you pay for. ;-)

Hi, Bob.

Not necessarily. You would have an alternative only IF some entrepreneur thought he could make a profit by producing and selling a competing product. Twenty years ago there were several competitors, but they gradually dropped out when they could not generate enough sales to cover their expenses of developing and marketing. Microsoft Money was the last serious challenger - to date. But who knows what some enterprising young programmer may be working on even now.

Yes, 2009 is the current version, but the 2010 version should be out in a month or two, if past release schedules hold.

Bob,

How about Microsoft? I'm a pretty advanced with Excel but only use about 40% of the available features. Guess I could ramp down to MS Works but it's missing many spreadsheet "features" I find critical.

I remember paying considerably more for financial packages in the early 90's (DOS days). I'm amazed at what people expect for $50. Free lifetime support, free lifetime patches and upgrade support, etc. This stuff ain't cheap. Even offshore programmers cost money. I've been in IT management for 35 years and you'd be suprised what we pay for annual support for our applications. My ERP vendor hit me for $100k and then wants to be paid for requested enhancements (I call them fixes and advertised features that don't work) as well.

I recently upgraded to Quicken Premier 2008 because my version was sunsetted. I use Quicken Billpay and they sent me a free copy when I asked.
