where did my 2009 version go???

I've never heard of Quicken *upgrading* itself. It does automatic

*updates* (small changes for the same version) but even then you'll have to press a button to approve it. Something seems to be off and it may actually be a good reason to call them this time.

Since I don't have Windows 7, can't point to exact places.... but it would be interesting to find the Quicken program(s) and note the date when they were installed ?

No, I am the only one who has access to my computer. QB program was last installed on 6-10-2010. For the life of me I can't figure out what is going on! I can't access my data file without this window popping up about getting started with version 2010!

I ran the 2005, 2006 and 2007 Quicken Basic versions, but then Intuit stopped selling the Basic version, so I've run the Quicken Deluxe versions for 2008, 2009, 2010 and now 2011.

Did you buy that Quicken package in a retail store, order it from Quicken, or ... ???

HOW do you start Quicken each morning? Do you click on an icon on your desktop? Or use a Hotkey? Or click on an item in your Start menu? Is the icon for Quicken, or for your .qdf file?

Check the pathname for the application that runs when you click whatever you click to start Quicken. Then Copy and Paste that full pathname into your next post here. That should give us some clues as to what is happening to you that is not happening to me or the rest of us.

I'm sorry I mean Deluxe not Basic. I bought the retail version from Amazon.com I start quicken from an icon in the taskbar in Windows 7. I also tried from the exe file in Program files. The funny thing is that the icon is now called Quicken 2010!!!???? Here is the path:

"C:\Program Files\Quicken\qw.exe"

I was just remembering that every once in a while a window would come up asking me if I want to buy the newer edition. Could it have been that I inadvertently clicked on that? But I would have to pay some how for a newer version wouldn't I ? And why wouldn't it have said version 2011 instead of 2010?

I have tried clicking on the Quicken icon in the taskbar that now when I hold the cursor over it, it says Quicken 2010. The icon looks the same as my 2009 version, but it says 2010. It's the red square with the big white Q. Is that what the 2010 version looks like as well? I have tried clicking on the exe file in the Program Files folder. And I have tried clicking on my backup file and nothing starts my 2009 version.

I must apologize to all who responded to my post. I dug around and found my retail box of Quicken and it does indeed say it's the Deluxe 2010 version. What I was confused about it I have the 2009 QUICKBOOKS version. But in any event, it still opens by welcoming me and asking me if I am a new user or if I want to open from a previous version, and it says "We'll load your old Quicken data into this version of Quicken." Why is is saying that?

Regardless of what version I am using, or what version I thought I had, the program would not start normally. The Welcoming Screen to the new version and asking me if I was a new user is what got me confused. No matter what I tried the program would not start with my data file. Some kinder soul than some here told me to rename my data file with no more than 8 characters and that WORKED! Thanks to that person, ALL IS WELL NOW! You meet all kinds of people on the Internet. Some nice, some not so nice. Some with such simple little sad lives that picking on someone else is the only thing they have to make them feel better about themselves. So sad. Thanks again to that person who helped.

Thanks for reporting back. We've had many discussions here about data file names, but never one that produced the symptoms you described. I'm surprised that this error could have those results!

Quicken formats have changed over the years. In Quicken 2011, the default naming produces filenames that might run 20 characters or more, including the date that we may have had appended automatically.

Like many of us, I've been using Quicken since just about the time Intuit switched it from DOS to Windows in about 1991. One of the traditions (I suppose we can call it that) that lingers is the frequent use of 8.3 filenames (also known as SFNs or Short File Names) from the days when both DOS and Windows limited filenames to 8 characters plus, optionally, a

1-to-3-character extension. Apparently, some of the Quicken programmers were slow to break the 8.3 mindset, too. Up through Quicken 2009, the automatic backup process stored our backup files in the Quicken\BACKUP folder, using names created from our data filenames by shortening them to no more than 6 characters and adding a number from 01 to 05 (the default, which we could change to as high as 09). plus .qdf or another extension.

In prior discussions here, I have consistently recommended to use a filename of no more that 6 characters; I use just 5. This lets Quicken's automatic backup function add the number and still stay within the 8-character base filename limit. I think that is still a good rule, even though Quicken 2010 and 2011 add several more characters to the filenames of the automatic backups. (The manual backups I make at least once a day still use my short filename, to which Quicken adds .QDF--backup, making it MYDAT.QDF-backup. But Quicken's latest automatic backup is named MYDAT-2010-12-31.PM01.37.QDF-backup.)

Wow!! Never would have thought of that, even if I knew it before. We're talking Y2K programming here. 8.3 file names should be a thing of the past!!

Here's an interesting experiment: Use the Q file function to create a copy and name it more than 8 characters. Now try opening the copy. I'm betting that it will work just fine. If not, then my opinion of Intuit programmers just plunged even lower than it is now!!

I know this is way after the fact, but I experienced the same thing. I was too busy to pay much attention at the time. I've since bought a new computer and low and behold, all that's available is the dumbed down Quicken Essentials, which, it turns out, is was the "upgrade" they turned my old version into without my knowledge. I can no longer access my registers, enter checking info, etc... where did my old version go, what the hell were they thinking and what did you ultimately do? I want to be ready for tax season, but it's looking grim! Help! Gracias
