live in ILL, work in WISC

ok.. not sure how to handle this one... in FED TurboTax, or the State versions.

We live in Illinois, son goes to school at UW/Madison.

He gets a W-2 for working in Wisc... The W-2 reflects our home address - Illinois - It has no state withholding taken out - only Federal -

Where, if anywhere - do I file a "state" return for him ?

Next - if he goes out to Calif and works there just over the summer, and gets a W-2 from out there - how does that complicate things :)

Witholding is immaterial. When you transfer the numbers from the W2 to the Quicken W2 screen, you indicate in Box 15 what state the income was earned in and the amount in Box 16. Depending on the amount of income, you may not need to file in WI. IIRC, if you do, Quicken will offer to sell you filing for that state when you click on the State tab. Otherwise if you chose to file by yourself, you'll have to go to the WI tax website and see how they want you to file.

And, so long as we're talking:

This is why getting tax software from some place other than Intuit might be a Good Idea. I'm pretty sure H&R Block's offering has unlimited state tax returns, not true of Turbotax which, depending upon the version, has one (1) state tax available, any additional cost money.

Next: My understanding is that you can call a kid of yours a dependent even if they file their own returns. While it's possible, it's unlikely your kid would have to file unless they're really ringing in the cash. You'll have to check Wisconsin's tax site to see what they consider minimum taxable income. My two kids have worked during their college careers and I didn't have to file anything special, nor include their income in with mine. One of them is out from under and working in California these days; the other is still in college up in Massachusetts.

Finally: Some states run on-line tax software. New Jersey does, for sure; other states, you'll have to check. If your kid (not you!) has to file then doing it that way may be a decent option.

our neighbors - from KY - are Beck's -

anyway... I've filed in ILL since he was about 16, as I setup a Schwab account, and he has 1099's, Int, Div, Cap Gains.. and he had a W-2 from YMCA lifeguard, running baseball/soccer games, etc.

On his UW W-2 - line 15 --> blank -

My thinking is - since UW didn't report anything to WI... ?? And for ILL, since I didn't know any better, and it is his "home" address for W-2, 1099, that I'll do the ILL 1040 -

Not sure what I'll do when he moves to Calif over the summer...
