MS Mouse Scroll Wheel Problem - revisited

For those who may not have seen this, I offer the following link as additional info regarding the origin of the MS mouse scroll wheel problem. Some of the info at the following url is a bit technical, but I think there is sufficient non-technical language to get the basic point across.

Last time I sent a tinyurl, it didn't work, so here is the full url.

John,

Do you know if this problem still exists with the new Q2008?

Sorry, but I don't.

And since I don't have Vista, I'll not be able to verify it even when Q2008 is released. But I bet those MS mouse users with Vista will let the world know when they get Q2008.

[It's conceivable that, if the problem is fixed in Q2008, Intuit will publish it in the list of improvements they have been putting out for recent versions. I don't see that list at Intuit's web site for Q2008 today; hopefully it will be available soon.]

Hi, John.

Well, I finally got to see the web page you pointed me to. Neither the TinyURL nor the full URL below worked. Finally, I opened my browser (IE7) and signed in to MSN.com. Then I pasted the full URL into IE7's address bar - and read the thread. Now, both your links work for me.

That thread never mentions Quicken or Intuit, and I'm not techie enough to know whether the driver coding explained there is the key to our problem. But I'll probably get Q2008 in a week or two and see if Intuit has fixed it.

When Q2007 was released, a year ago, Vista was still in the late beta stages. Intuit and other developers don't like to shoot at a moving target, so many didn't really get serious about making their products work with Vista until after the 1/30/07 public launch. I HOPE that Intuit will have incorporated everything needed to make Quicken 2008 work smoothly with Vista.

What is the problem? I'm using Quicken 2007 with an MS mouse under Vista Ultimate and I have no wheel scrolling problem.

I have neither the software or the hardware, but I think the problem is with the Intellipoint 6.0 driver.

I'm running the Intellipoint 6.10.155.0 driver. As I said, no problems here. What are the supposed symptoms?

Hi, Ken.

I've got the problem! And I've seen it reported in several other places, in both public and MVP newsgroups.

I'm running Quicken 2007 Basic in Windows Ultimate x64. My input devices are the Microsoft Wireless Desktop 6000, consisting of the Microsoft Wireless Comfort Keyboard and the Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 6000, bought from the eCompany Store about a year ago. I'm running them on the IntelliPoint/IntelliType drivers 6.2 that I downloaded from Microsoft. I THINK they are 6.2; those driver version numbers get me awfully confused and there's no simple Help | About that I can find for them. Device Manager says they are version 6.10.155.0, dated 11/7/2006, and when it searched for updates just now, it said they are "are up to date".

The problem: In a Quicken Register, like my checking account register, if I use the scroll wheel to scroll up (to an earlier date), it scrolls up - but if I then scroll down, it still scrolls UP! :>( No matter which way I roll the wheel, it always scrolls up. To see a later date, or even to get back to today, I have to click the Scroll Bar. The behavior is the same in a Quicken Report, such as my Household Income statement, which runs about two pages onscreen. There again, if I scroll down, nothing happens at first. If I page down, then I can scroll back up, but not down. So I can always see my Income, but not my Total Expenses, unless I use the Scroll Bar.

This problem does not exist in any of my other applications or anywhere else in Vista, just in Quicken. No problem here in Windows Live Mail beta. And it didn't happen in Windows XP with the same hardware. So, is it Intuit's problem, or Microsoft's? Unfortunately, they both seem to think that it's MY problem, not theirs. :>(

That's why we are HOPING that Quicken 2008 will hold the cure. I guess we'll see in a few days. Stay tuned...

Thanks for the info, RC. I wasn't suggesting that the problem didn't exist. It was rather that I hadn't experienced it, and didn't know what it was.

Why you (and others) have the problem, and I don't, I have no idea.
