mysteriously missing entry

Attempting to reconcile my bank account this evening I discovered a very large discrepancy. Checking back through previous months I found that a CC payment from four months ago that had been recorded and reconciled was now missing. Re-entering this amount with the original date brought everything back into perfect balance. Each of the previous months back to that point had been balanced and all entries were marked as reconciled but this one entry had simply vanished.

It took only a little while to discover the missing entry but the fact that it could be missing is very disturbing. What can possibly have deleted just one line in one register causing all subsequent months to be out of balance although they had been correct before?

Darrell, I too had a single transaction drop into oblivion. I couldn't isolate it, just the amount which I corrected via an adjusting entry. Doesn't exactly instil confidence in the product..

Is it possible you did a COPY and PASTE of a transaction? I've sometimes noticed that occurs intermittently that when I do a COPY/PASTE, the original transaction disappears. Just a thought; I always try to be careful when I do this to ensure that the original transaction is still in the register. This might be me doing something wrong, or one of Quicken's "quirks" I've learned to live with. I wonder if others have noticed this?

Yes - in an investment account, cash transaction [Deposit, Withdraw, etc], the Copy/Paste sequence behaves as a Cut/Paste. The "copied" transaction disappears. Behavior is "normal" for an investment transaction [Buy, Sell, Div, etc].

Have not seen this behavior in a Cash Flow account though.

it, just the amount which

You are certainly right about my confidence being shaken. I have been using Quicken since the days one could get it on a floppy and never had a problem that was not due to my own error or innattention. I may have to begin using "backup" :-)

Nope Andrew, this was no copy paste. The entry that vanished was one that had been made four months earlier at which time the register was reconciled and was in balance. The subsequent months had also been reconciled and were in balance until this item disappeared. To locate the error I worked backward until I found a month that agreed with the paper statements. I don't regard this as a "quirk" it is a very serious matter. Anything could vanish if this entry could. I will probably start looking for an alternative to Quicken.

I don't know if this is your situation, but I recently had the same sort of problem - and it was due to my stupidity. Using Q H&B 2007 (Australian), I had downloaded and reconciled a CC account, including a transfer from my cheque account to pay the balance. Later I manually entered some data in the cheque account, including that payment again to the CC account. Then, later again, when I was reconciling the cheque account, I found the duplicated entry, and deleted the transfer instead of the manual entry. At least that's how I recall what caused the fun hours of chasing the stuff-up! Cheers, BK

In my case, the lost transaction(s) amounted to exactly $230 and were in my CASH account. No way to trace it as I seldom keep receipts when I pay for something in cash as I seldom PAY CASH. I often RECEIVE it, though but seldom issue receipts.
