I am using Q 2010. I want to produce a report for a single category. There are many transactions in the category and it goes from 1997 to present. I want a 2 column report with one column showing the year and the second column showing the total amount for the year. I have done a Spending by Category report and set the Column field to Date. This gives me the information in rows. I would like to have the report show the information as columns. Thanks for any and all help.

You want a two-column report for a single category spanning multiple years that looks like this?:
Detail Year Total
$XX.XX $XX.XX $XX.XX
---------- $XXX.XX $XX.XX $XX.XX $XX.XX $XX.XX
---------- $XXX.XX
I don't believe you can do this report entirely within Quicken. You could, however, export to Excel to get the report you seek.
Click on Reports>Spending>Income and Expense by Category. Change Date Range to desired range. Change Interval to "None". Click "Customize" then "Categories" tab and select desired category. Put cursor over $ amount of report (magnifying glass appears) and double click. Put cursor on "Date" label of 1st column and click once to sort by date. Select "Year" from drop-down "Sort Order" menu. Customize report to eliminate any unwanted columns. Export to Excel.
You'll have to do a little work on the report once it's sucked into Excel, but all the information you want is there.

Here's another approach, based on a different assumption about what you're looking for.
Reports > Banking > Transaction
Customize:
1.) Select Date Range 2.) Subtotal by Year 3.) Put a check in "Totals only" 4.) Exclude all columns but "Date" and "Amount" 5.) Select Category
Thanks, that is just what I wanted.
