Proceeds from Stock Sale do not show up in cash-flow report

I get confused with the difference between Cash-Flow and Income-Expense reports but when I sell a stock I expect to see the proceeds on the Income or Inflows portion of the report. I do see the realized loss but where did the proceeds go?

When I enter the transaction (Sell) I do transfer the proceeds to a cash account. I understand that is a transfer (Sellx).

When I run the cash-flow report, the proceeds will appear if I INCLUDE Transfers but those reports really get ugly.

Does this make sense?

Thank you,

Fred J.

You should include your Quicken year, version, and edition when you initiate a question (See Help > About Quicken). Ex: Q2020 R25.18 Deluxe.

The phrase "Cash Flow" is partially self-explanatory: it refers to cash flowing into, or out of, accounts. If you pay for a purchase using a check, you have a cash flow out of your checking account. If you pay for a purchase by charging your credit card, you have no cash flow (credit card cash flows occur when you pay the credit card company).

If you sell some shares of a security and deposit the funds into the same account where you held the security, there is no cash flow ... but, unless you sold for exactly what you paid, there should be some capital gain, or loss (categorized to _RlzdGain).

[Different Quicken versions and different Quicken reports may have different default report customizations.]

In Q2020, _RlzdGain appears by default in both the Cash Flow and the Income/Expense by Category reports ... regardless of what you did with the proceeds from the sale.

The Cash Flow report excludes all transfers by default. So, by default, it will show the Gain/Loss on security sales, but not any transfer of funds from the investment account.

The Income/Expense by Category report includes all transfers except "internal transfers" (transfers between accounts included in the report) by default. If the account where the security sale took place and the account to which you transferred the funds from the sale are both included in the report, you will not see the transfer of funds unless you Customize the report to show those "internal transfers".

So the "proceeds" from the sale of a security will cause a gain or loss to be reported in both the Cash Flow report and the Income/Expense report; but unless you transferred the funds from the sale into some other account, the "funds" from the sale will not appear in any report. When you have transferred the sale proceeds out of the investment account, you will have to Customize the Cash Flow report to see that transfer.

John, Thank you for your reply. It is clear, concise, and greatly appreciated.

By the way, I am using Q2020 25.18 Premier.
