A buy does not show up in portfolio summary.

A buy of CMA was downloaded from Schwab. The cash was deducted from the cash account, the transaction shows up in the portfolio tansactions but the position does not show up in the portfolio summary report. CMA (Commerica Bank) does not showup in the security list. I tried to add CMA manually and received the confirmation that the symbol matched Commercia and was a large cap stock but it still does not show up in the security list. I have about 30 other positions in 2 accounts and they all are reported correctly. Any ideas?

You don't say what version of Quicken you are using.

In Q2005, try this,

Investing > Security List > Options > Show hidden securities

For the future, unhide the security, by selecting it in the list (while hidden securities are shown) and clicking the "Hide(x)" menu option.

John, before expending a lot of effort on this thread, read the corresponfing thread in Quicken Forums with the same userid/problem description.

Ok, I checked it. I agree, the op did not always respond helpfully; and one of those times was when the op was asked if the security was hidden ... the response to that question did not actually answer the question. It is certainly possible that the op verified that the security was not hidden, but if you read the response again, it is also possible that the op did not know what a hidden security is and still does not.

The thing of it is that having the security hidden explains every problem I understand the op as having. Believe it or not, if you already have a security in your Security List, Quicken (Q2005 deluxe) does not beef if you "add" it again. So if the security is hidden and you think you don't have it in Quicken at all, you can add it again and still not see it ... and not get any error message either. Also if the security is hidden, you can see a buy (or shares added) transaction for it in your investment account register ... but not see the security in the Summary tab for the account, or in the Portfolio View.

FIXED! Thank you. It was hidden. I thought that all securities would show up in the Security list even if hidden. I once owned CMA and sold it. When I originally downloaded the account the former buy and sell were imported and I must have hiden the security.
