Q07 Renaming

For starters; did you upgrade from a previous version of Quicken that had renaming rules but you believe that Q2007 is not handling renaming the same as it was handled in your previous version?

Renaming depends on finding unique data in the Payee and/or Memo fields to identify the "true" payee. If the downloaded SS transactions for you and your wife have the exact same data in the payee and memo fields, you can't use renaming rules to assign two different payee names to those transactions.

If there is data in the Payee or Memo field that is different for you and your wife, but constant for each of you individually for every download, then Quicken can use that to rename.

Here's a thought: What if you created scheduled transactions for these two and have Quicken prompt you a few days before they are supposed to be entered? Then you'd have "Dick's SS Payment" and "Mary's SS Payment." I'm assuming, perhaps incorrectly, that the amounts will be different. (I'm also assuming your wife is named Mary. :-) ) Then when you download the actual payment, Quicken MIGHT be able to match the d/l against the scheduled transaction (which will already be in the register because Quicken prompted you to put it in) and match it up that way. If it doesn't match it up that way, it should at least give you the opportunity to manually match it up with an existing transaction. That way, the d/l'd transaction would have the name you want to give it.

Anybody see any problems with this idea that I'm not seeing? This should work, shouldn't it?

John, I upgraded from Q04 to Q07. Q04 didn't have renaming before. It appears that the only thing different in the download is the $ amount, all else is the same . Your response sounds like I will have to manually change the Payee to what ever I want... No big deal only happens once a month. Thanks for you response.... Dick

DP, Thanks for you response, but I already have a schedule transactions for these setup and your solution doesn't work. PS My wife's name is Mary good guess....

So when a transaction is downloaded, it doesn't match it up to the scheduled transaction? The scheduled transaction is already in the register right? In the list of downloaded transactions, it doesn't give you a chance to match it up with anything already in the register?

If it doesn't give you the chance to match d/l'd transactions with existing transactions, then you run the risk of getting lots of duplicate transactions in your register. I don't understand what's going on there.

I'll recheck again next month when the next months payment is made and I'll report back the results.

I have reported a similar problem in the qkn forum w/07p. For me it was a payee that I have had for years & was not pre-entered. 07 not only refused to rename, when I did manually enter it was not among the transactions that I could "edit>match manually." I finally deleted the downloaded transaction & manually cleared the transaction I entered. As this is an entry that occurs every 6 wks, it will be awhile before I know it this behavior continues.
