QIF file with just Categories and Sub-Categories

I'm using the Australian version Quicken, Quicken Personal Plus 2007 R1.

At the moment I am also using Landware's Pocket Quicken to capture daily transactions on my phone. They are later transferred to Quicken. Nice and easy...

Until Intuit pulled the plug on the Pocket Quicken license - so the product is now orphaned. And now I need to upgrade my phone, but Pocket Quicken will not install on the latest phone operating systems.

Plan B is to get 'Qif Entry' for an iPad or iPhone and use that to capture transactions into QIF files which I'll later import into Quicken.

But before I can use Qif Entry I need to export all my Quicken categories and sub categories to a .qif file which will be imported into the Qif Entry app.

But in their infinite wisdom Reckon in Australia has removed the QIF export function from Quicken Personal Plus 2007!

I've managed to get all my categories and sub categories into a .csv file. I now need to convert this .csv file into a .qif file containing just my Categories and Sub-Categories.

Can this be done? If so, what must my .qif file contain? There won't be any actual transactions. I just need the categories and sub categories in the .qif file.

Thanks

To be sure I understand: you're saying that your Quicken version can import QIF files, but it can not export them? If so, that seems odd to me. How about newer Australian versions of Quicken; can they export QIF files?

And are you saying that "QIF Entry" does not allow you to manually enter new categories? Or modify existing categories?

So you must have already created a category in "QIF Entry" by importing a Category List, before you can use that category in a transaction?

Are you certain that "QIF Entry" won't create a new category for you when it sees a transaction with a category it does not already have on file? How were you planning to keep the "QIF Entry" "Category List" up to date (what were you going to do when you needed a new category)?

There are a lot of applications out there that will convert CSV (or Excel) files to QIF ... but every one I find is only concerned with converting "transactions" (such as those in the files you might download from your financial institution). But I don't see any that will convert a Category List.

It might not be that difficult to write (say, an Excel add-in) to do the job, but I can't find any indication that anyone has found the need to do so.

Just took a quick look at the web page for "QIF Entry".

I found the following there:

"v1.2 and above" "able to use .csv for account/categories ...".

So you may not need to convert your .csv file after all.

[And it appears you need both Accounts and Categories from your Quicken file.]
