Quicken 2011 is HERE!

Ken - I'm with you in that usually there's at least ONE thing that makes me a little happier from the previous version. But I fear that I read somewhere where they are messing around again with the UI in that one will not be able to have a button that brings you directly to the portfolio view from the main panel. I hope I am wrong about that.

I'd really love them to add some support for bonds and CDs that we've been gripping about it year's past here. How about a nice interface to the Treasury facility, "Savings Bond Wizard"? A few times each year I have to go in there and manually copy and update savings bond values. Well, I'm excited to see what's new this year when I pick up my copy this weekend.

I've cleared tomorrow to play with it. Told my wife to take a hike or something, I'll be heads down with Q2011, and told the kid to make sure SHE walks the dog because I'll be busy.

You can still get to the Portfolio via a Quicken Toolbar button.

Not what you asked for, but there is a new Maturity Date report for bonds and CD's.

Quite a few new features; some of which have been on my wish list for years.

God, I hate it when the Quicken group is so DARN civil. No fun at the breakfast table for us!.

Anyway, I don't think my post made it that I did find a bug. I had to move 2 credit cards to a new Chase URL. In trying to set up the card accounts, Q deluxe found the accounts but would only allow me to set one up as a credit card account type. It did not recognize the account type when I tried to use it for a second card. I just went back to Q D 2010 and set it up then converted to 2011 again. Weird.

Would you mind telling us what the new features are? And which ones you think are good, and why?

Thanks.

I'm not sure everyone will like them as much as I do. But ....

A few of my favorites:

1.) Virtually all non-investment account register fields are now optionally selectable for display.

2.) The "Posting Date" can now be optionally displayed (and sorted on) in non-investment account registers {no longer necessary to right-click, then CTRL+Copy transactions, to see it}. Posting date is used when reconciling to printed statements; it's nice to have it easily visible/modifiable/sortable.

3.) The original downloaded payee name can now be optionally displayed in non-investment account registers. For those like me, who want the data in that downloaded payee field ... but would also like to have Quicken rename downloaded payees; this solves a dilemma. [Renaming replaces the downloaded payee name with the renamed payee name - now that doesn't lose (or, necessarily, hide) the original payee info.]

4.) The OFX field Financial Institution Transaction ID (FITID) that uniquely identifies each transaction, can now be optionally displayed in non-investment account registers. Making it easier to check whether a downloaded transaction FITID (as seen in the OFXlog) is the same as one already in your account register ... explaining why the downloaded transaction did not appear in your "Accept transactions into register" window.

5.) A new All Transactions pseudo-"register"; that displays all transactions from all non-investment accounts. Same options for which fields to display, and several useful filters.

6.) The Investment Transaction report now subtotals share quantities (where applicable) ... an improvement, but I had hoped for a running share balance. Maybe next time.

I'm a bit disappointed that the "new" register fields can't be selected to appear in reports (or searched in a Find). But this is much better than before.

Some other new capabilities:

1.) A "Maturity Date" report for Bonds and CD's

2.) Direct export to Excel file from non-investment account registers (no need to create a report). This would be in the above list, if it exported those new fields.

3.) All account registers allow column resizing

4.) When sorting on register fields, virtually all fields allow low-to-high, and high-to-low.

5.) For those who had problems sizing the Holdings pane on the Overview tab of investment accounts: the Overview tab (for all account types) now opens in a separate window, which can be resized like any Windows window.

There are probably more, but I can't find them at the moment.

Thanks very much. That was very helpful.

Thanks John - often when I get a new version, I don't play with the identified 'new' features, so I really don't know about them; I'll take your list and investigate when I get it. Might take a ride over to Best Buy tonight so I can play with the new Q in my jammie tomorrow morning.

Mr. Jan - Go read the Red Sox USENET group if you want to see incivilities! I put up with it since every once in a while, a pearl post is made by someone.

I'm with you, Andrew. The only thing better than playing with the latest new Quicken version, is playing with the latest new Quicken version in my jammies. ;-)

BTW, my copy arrived today from Amazon, and I'm going to install it just as soon as I finish typing this message ... and I put on my jammies. ;-)

Margaret

Already one HUGE bug fix of Q2010 H&B. Q2011 H&B will open to my default account, and have that account be showing in the Account Bar. Q2010 forced me to scroll up in the Account Bar to have that account displayed. Well worth the $64.99 at Costco.

Quicken was not out on the floor. Had to go to customer service, get the Item Number, buy it, and pick it up from the Death Match cage.

You could have gotten your default account opened at startup in Q2010 ... if you had selected "Classic Menus" in the View menu. Q2011 just makes that option available for both "Classic" and "Standard" menus. Still, definitely an improvement.

Got my Q 2011 D today, 'downgraded' from Premier based on cost (Deluxe was cheaper, and at Staples, had an addition $15 off instant rebate) as well as some reasurring comments from others in this forum talking about this.

So far, so good.

I will say that the selection of multiple Categories seems more accurate; one of my Q accounts is for a NPO that has quite a few sub categories within subcategories and often it would take me many times to highlight and get it to 'stick'. Thus far, this seems much better, and the dialog to select the categories seems to be clearer to navigate to.

Anyone aware of download stores that are near the club prices of $39 or Amazon $44.99 for deluxe? Amazon digital download is not available yet for deluxe. Thx

I found Quicken 2011 Deluxe at Best Buy in St Petersburg, FL for $39.95. Price on box was 59.95, but a tag on the shelf showed 39.95. I was running 2008 Deluxe. I did OSU, and backed up my 08 data file. Installation (it removed 2008, installed 2011 and ran update to R3. The whole process took about 20 minutes on my 4 year old HP laptop running XP SP3. Stared up Quicken and the file conversion took place and started (that is included in the 20 minutes mentioned above). Did another OSU and it connected to my bank and 2 other financial institutions. At first blush, all looks well.

I saved $39.95 MORE than YOU did...simply by NOT being suckered into buying Q2011.

He couldn't do that. He needs it to wipe his mouth off after each of his postings.

Suckered? Why do you say that? I always buy the latest Q and I don't feel 'suckered'. True, you might not have spent the money, but so what? You're not enjoying the latest software. No me, it's a hobby. Why do you use such terms just because someone else thinks differently from you anyway? There's two mottos that apply, "Money was meant to be spent" and "He who dies with the most toys win". You seem to lose in both cases.

Rather than sling arrows against others, why not see the light and join us in the fun?

Those attitudes are common among those who presently have OR WILL HAVE financial problems. Those attitudes are at the base of why so many in the U.S. were affected by the recession. For those of us WHO practice frugality, the recession had NO EFFECT on us, whatsoever. I retired from full-time employment at 42. When will YOU be able to afford to retire? At

80? Those who base their self-esteem on BUY BUY BUY and/or having the latest "toys" show to the rest of us just HOW shallow and insignificant YOUR value system is.
