Quicken XG 2004: Hang in One Step Update

OK I realize I'm using a 3-year old version of Quicken. I just haven't seen a compelling reason to update to their latest version & in fact I'm seriously considering abandoning Quicken altogether and going to Microsoft Money. But I won't burden you with my reasons for this here...

Anyway, since the beginning of the year (2007) I have experienced hangs on occasion with the One Step Update process, when downloading quotes & currency exchange rates.

When this happens, on my dual CPU system, I bring up Windows Task Manager (Processes List) and find that the QW.EXE image is consuming anywhere from

45-48% of the CPU as it churns and does nothing. My only recourse is to go to Windows Task Manager (Applications List) and do an "End Task" on the Quicken XG 2004 task.

I have found that this inability to download quotes tends to happen sporadically and that if it happens at all, odds are that it won't work for several hours (i.e. it appears to be a server-side issue).

My issue with Intuit here is that the Quicken program should handle a server-side issue more gracefully and that it shouldn't hang.

I know another person who is also using Quicken XG 2004 on a single CPU system and this problem has occurred to that person also. When it happens, his CPU pegs at 96-98%.

What a lame program... What a lame company...

I do remember reading something about how Intuit had some sort of plan to limit the ability of users to download financial data using old versions of the program to 3 years from the date of issue of the program to encourage (force/bully) users to upgrade (make more $). I am actually OK with this, and if this is what they're actually implementing here, they should (and the program should) handle it much more gracefully.

I also have been having this problem fairly regularly for a few months now. But CPU usages is 99% when it hangs. I have to use task manager to stop Quicken. When I restart the program I continue the download and it is successful. But today it continues to hang. I did get it to work once with one of my files after a doing the above but it continues to hang with the other file. I am using XG2003.

Same problem with my Quicken 2002. I have to use Task Manager to escape.

The problem with quote download continues this morning. Is any else still experiencing this problem with any other versions of QuickenXG?

Still not working with Quicken2002 (Cdn version) at 6:30 PM MST Monday. Quicken just hangs waiting for the update to complete.

The hang is in the Quotes & Headlines. For me it stops at 98% complete.

If you only try to download Currency Exchange Rates, it doesn't hang. I'm not sure if it's downloading the data however.

Still a problem for me at 19:35 MST on Feb 12, 2007. Again, I'm using Quicken XG 2004.

I found the following letter on the Intuit Canada website (Adobe PDF format) which deals with their "Sunset Policy" for Quicken versions 2002, 2003 &

2004:

formatting link
As you can see, they will be removing technical support & product updates for all three versions this year: Quicken 2002: Mar 31, 2007 Quicken 2003: Apr 30, 2007 Quicken 2004: May 31, 2007

HOWEVER, (by my reading) only Quicken 2002 is affected by a removal of stock quote updates and the ability to download transactions from your financial institution and this is NOT supposed to take place for another 6-7 weeks.

In my opinion, the current FLAKINESS of the online quotes download capability amounts to a subtle form of cyber-terrorism on the part of Intuit to drive more customers to upgrade to Quicken XG 2007 at $99 a pop. However, I really believe they're shooting themselves in the foot when it becomes evident just how sucky their software coding is - if the QW.EXE executable has to be brute-force terminated to recover from the problem.

I did contact customer support by phone this afternoon and was told that they were having a problem with the quote server. I received an e-mail from the support CSR sent at 5:03 p.m.

Thank you for contacting Intuit Canada!

The issue has been resolved now.You can shutdown the pc and restart it and try to download the quotes and it will work successfully.

Well obviously it is not working as of this time tonight. I guess we will see what happens tommorrow.

I contacted Intuit Canada support at 12:20 p.m. today and they confirmed that they are still having an "investment update services problem" it is affecting all versions of Quicken and has nothing to do with discontinuation of service for older versions. I also received an e-mail confirming this.
