Renaming rules

Using Quicken 2006 Deluxe in XP

When I download investment transactions, there is one share name that Quicken always asks me if it is the same as ..... It is and I always say yes. Why does Quicken not learn that permanently? I thought that was what the renaming rules did. Maybe I have it turned off or I do not know how to use the renaming rules function.

Can Q be made to learn that that particular share is the same as ... ? How?

Just wanted to add that I have both

- Apply renaming rules to downloaded transactions

- Automatically create rules when manually renaming selected.

What is a "share name"?

Sorry. I meant the name of an equity.

Like Eli Lily, etc. Sometimes the name also has a common abreviation which Quicken recognizes and asks me if this is the same security as xx in my account or should it create a new security entry. I answer yes, it's the same, but the same thing happens every month. Should Quicken not be able to remember that or am I asking too much?

I was reviewing the archives ad apparently this is a known problem that someoe solved by doing it manually but I am not sre how you do it maually.

If it's a known problem, it's news to me.

Quicken renaming rules apply to payees, not to securities.

I have never had a problem when Quicken received an investment account download with a security name it had not seen before and I told Quicken what existing security to match it to. Quicken has never "forgotten" what I "told" it. (That happens extremely rarely for me, by the way. )

But, that process does not create a "renaming rule": it matches an exact name in a download to one specific security that already exists in Quicken. From that point on, the two different security names are matched by CUSIP.

The next time I download new transactions, it asks me the same question again about that security. That's why I was puzzled. Must be something about these securities. It's always the same 2 securities.

Sorry. When I saw that it did not remember about the securities, I assumed that was the function. My mistake.

I can't recall hearing of your problem before. I don't have any good ideas.

You could try Editing the security before you next download and unchecking the box "Matched with online security". You should still get asked to "match" the downloaded name, but the download after that, might not ask ... but I think it's a long shot.

Just in case there might be others who are seeing the same thing, or who would have an idea about the problem, you might post the name of the financial institution; and the name of the security as you have it in Quicken and as it appears in the download.

[The only way I can logically think to explain what you see is the your fi is allowing unprintable garbage characters into the name of the security in their downloaded data ... different unprintable garbage in each download. While not impossible, it's also not very likely. It's just the only thing I can think of.]
