Renaming rules

I somehow got my Quicken Premier 2013 renaming rules messed up. It will download some of the transactions from my bank just as it should but others are either skipped entirely or it tries to rename the transaction then abandons the process when I intervene.

An example is as follows: I stopped at a local Shell station and fueled my car, using my debit card, then went inside and withdrew some cash from the Shell station's ATM. Both of these show up as expected on my bank's web site but when I did my daily Quicken update all that it downloaded was the fuel purchase. Both of these were done with my debit card account and the amount taken from my regular checking account. Why would Quicken update show the fuel purchase but not show the ATM cash withdrawal? Same debit card...same PIN number...same location.

What can I do to clear these renaming rules out and start all over from ground zero? Gordon

I don't understand why you think renaming rules are involved in determining which transactions get downloaded.

Also, you should post the name of your financial institution, exactly as it appears in Quicken ... and the "connection method" the account uses for downloading. The possibilities for connection method are: Direct Connect, Web Connect, and Express Web Connect. You can find that information on the Online Services tab of the Edit Account Details dialog for the account.

You don't say what version you have, but I don't think it's changed recently: Tools / Renaming Rules for a start...

Along with what the others have said, I don't think it involves renaming.

I've found that sometimes transactions like yours that are different but at the same place, may be delayed a day or so between in downloading.

But very likely two different payment processor procedures that also concerned a 'hold' on the gas purchase. I believe that typically a hold in used for a purchase like gas where you are preauthorized at the point of sale, but they can't tell how much you're REALLY going to spend...so they hold an amount that is often considerable more than reality. (This is, in fact, how some folks end up bouncing accounts through really no fault of their own, when a subsequent debit is attempted to be made that goes over the existing hold amounts on the card.)

For example, just this past week on a charge I made to a restaurant for, say, $10.00, I noticed that my credit card online statement showed a hold for that amount, and NOT anything concerning the $11.50 I actually charged after writing in the tip and total. A few days later, the Q download correctly came in for $11.50.

But what I don't understand is why the real CASH out transaction didn't show up but the gas did!

Probably because of the way the financial institution processes them. Most likely not a cause for concern.

That situation about the holds on gas purchases is a real pain. It happened to me just the other week. I would've been overdrawn had I not just made a cash deposit and noticed the discrepancy on my balance available and checked it out. A few days later, it all straightened out after a phone call to the bank....

Thanks to all of you for your answers. I am still working on this but haven't gotten it resolved, yet. I use my local FAA Employee's Credit Union for my banking. It provides a web site where I can look at my account any time. Those items that haven't or won't download into my Quicken software do show up on this web site and the account balance shows that the transaction has been completed.

I usually just print out a paper copy of the latest bank information, then close the bank's web site and open Quicken. Then I key the data in as it appears on my paper copy. At this point my Quicken software shows the same remaining bank balance as is shown on the paper copy of the bank's web site.

I have a substantial bank balance in this account so I'm sure the bank isn't delaying any posting until they are sure another transaction won't run the account below zero. Even if that were to happen, I have an overdraft coverage that would take care of the problem. That is, the bank would go ahead and complete the transaction than chalk it up to me as a quickloan. I've never used this but it is activated and should make it unnecessary for the bank to hold off any account transactions.

I'm still reasonably convinced that this is a Quicken renaming rules problem. I used to download these problem transactions with no trouble but recently I started getting popup windows asking if I wanted to make a new renaming rule. I may have clicked the wrong response button on one or some of these sometime in the past. Gordon
