splitting stock and handling spinoffs in multiple accounts

I hold VOD in both my brokerage and IRa accounts. It recently did a reverse split and a spinoff of Verizon shares. Without thinking this through, I thought I had to handle these transactions in each account, but soon saw t hat it was creating transactions in both accounts for whatever I did in one (and when I tried to correct them, I made a gigantic mess and hung Quicken ).

The number of shares I originally owned in these accounts is different so t he figures I need to enter in the Split stock and Spinoff screens are diff erent depending on which account I do the transaction in, but I'm now getti ng the impression that this doesn't matter because it just establishes the ratios and Quicken (2014) propates this to the second account. Can anyone confirm?

Stock splits are applied across all accounts. Spinoff is not applicable to this transaction. I suggest you review and monitor this discussion on the QLC site:

I will check the link but don't understand at this point why spinoff isn't appropriate. I got VZ shares because I had VOD. That's not a spinoff?

Nope. In this case, that is a dividend - in shares rather than dollars or pounds.

Thanks, Tod. I just about had heart failure when I read the thread you po inted me to. What a complicated mess, and one that Quicken does not handle directly. Independent of the VZ dividend, I worked with my split t o arrive at the correct # of shares, but now, every time I download my hold ings with OSU, I get a message that a split for a different ratio (close to mine but not exactly the same) is missing from my data. I'd rather use mi ne since it produces the correct number of whole and fractional shares but I see no way to get rid of this repeated nudging to use the downloaded one. Is there a solution to that?

Thanks.

Sorry for the delayed response. I am not clear on the specifics of those n udges. Sometimes I see them, sometimes I don't. You might try unchecking the specific split suggested by Quicken, then "accepting" the empty (none-c hecked) list of possible splits. I do that sometimes but have not tried to correlate program behavior.

If the suggested split has a different date than your split; you could try either changing the date of your split to match the suggested split date, or manually entering a 1 for 1 split on the suggested split date.
