TurboTax Deluxe: best price?

Saw that coming but not quite so fast. Figured they'd wait to see what the magazine reviews did to the sales numbers before they threw in the towel. Interesting what a 1 star rating and hundreds of complaints on Amazon can do...

They are still more expensive than TaxCut, but there's more of a reason to consider them I suppose.

The most interesting quote:

"Intuit expects this decision will result in a deferral of approximately $70 million of revenue from Intuit?s second fiscal quarter to its third fiscal quarter."

So they expected to collect an additional $70M in charges and now they won't. There's no way that will be a deferral - the fallout from this fiasco will last until next year.

Furthermore - the finance or marketing genius that thought up this idea ought to be shown the door...

Would love to be at the annual stockholders meeting next week. Can just imagine what the questions will be about this!

They sure did!! Unless English is someone's third or fourth language, the following has to mean that for $29.95, I can E-FILE up to 5 separate returns with TT Basic. Last year, that would have cost me $29.95 (or whatever the lowest cost version was) plus 5 x $17.95, or $119.70!!!!

"TurboTax desktop customers can e-file up to five federal tax returns, the limit set by the IRS. Early filers who have already completed a 2008 return and paid the $9.95 additional preparation fee will receive a refund. Those who have already purchased the packaged software can update their version by using the easy, one-click update."

Only partially. They're still charging you for "free" efiling whether you efile or not.

I picked this up on Intuit's web site:

Yes, but did you notice that the removal of the $9.95 charge for additional returns applies to both printed AND e-filed returns (federal returns, not state) up to 5 returns (which is the max allowed by the IRS).

For those that read my original reply carefully from Intuit Bob, part of what he said was "But if for any reason you don't believe you're getting your money's worth, we will refund the $9.95 fee(s) without question. Right now we're in the process of creating an automated, online process to make this quick and easy for any customer for whatever reason."

But the official press release made mention of only programmatic changes to TT, nothing about this website that originally one was going to have to go back to get your refunds for those $9.95s. So I spoke with him again asking if I was mistaken, and his reply was "We are making changes to the product that will eliminate the need to request a refund. It is a lot of work, but it is the right thing to do. So, with the update you'll be able to prepare and print to your heart's content without paying a penny more. Plus, you'll now be able to e-file up to 5 federal returns without paying another penny. The 5 limitation is an IRS rule.".
