Version R44.20 (Sep 2022)

Sep 30, 2022 Last reply: 3 years ago 16 Replies

Major update this morning.

What's New Banking registers can now display Pending Transactions. You can now choose to display Pending Transactions if they are available for download from your financial institution. This allows you to see bank and credit card activity sooner, even before the transaction has cleared. You can turn this feature on or off. If on, you can choose to include or exclude pending transaction values from your running balance. For investment customers, Real-time quotes are now available. Real-time quotes can be turned on or off using Edit ? Preferences ? Investments. Compare to Register now features icons for the frequently used tasks of Go to bank website, Set up payment option, One step update, and Last download information. Investment customers can now add and track cryptocurrency the same way as any security in Quicken. A global preference is also available to set cryptocurrency precision of six to eight decimal places. Created the Other Investments option as part of the Add Account feature. The Other Investments option can be used for setting up Stock Options, RSUs, Investment Partnerships, and other manual investments.

What’s Improved: Updated Lifetime Planner calculations to reflect new tax laws and tax rates. The Investment Performance Report can now display subtotals by Option Group. Adding a new investment transaction will no longer automatically reload the transaction list as long as the transaction appears at the end of the list. Closed accounts no longer appear on the list of accounts to select for synchronization. For Home & Business users, Quicken now populates shipping addresses on invoices when they are available. Snapshots of all of a transaction’s attachments will now display in the Transaction Attachments screen. Users can now schedule bill reminders for every x days using the Daily frequency option. For example, if a bill comes every 30 days instead of monthly.

What’s Fixed: Issue downloading Transactions and Opening Balance during the initial setup of Schwab accounts. Bill and Income Reminders did not expand in Compare to Register for disconnected investment & banking accounts. The Bill card on the dashboard did not update some data properly. The prompt to choose between Simple or Complete Investing appeared for users adding non-investment accounts. Issues refreshing the list of financial institutions when adding accounts. Issues using Un-match this transaction when automatic matching occurred incorrectly after downloading new transactions.

I didn't see any place to turn that on or off. Can you tell us where it is?

I don't see that option either.

But I think the following sentence from the Release Notes may be a clue: "You can now choose to display Pending Transactions IF THEY ARE AVAILABLE FROM YOUR FINANCIAL INSTITUTION [emphasis added].

Since the option is only available from the financial institution, if they choose to offer it (and possibly only for certain account types), I'm guessing the option - when present at all - will be somewhere in the account register (perhaps the Account Actions drop down, the Downloaded Transactions tab, or the Edit Account Details dialog).

Given that there has been speculation that the downloaded "Online Balance" for Chase EWC+ accounts was including pending transactions, perhaps Chase checking/savings accounts will have the option (my only Chase account is a credit card, and that account does not appear to have the option).

I found the following four items only when I installed R44.20 (I don't see them mentioned in the Release Notes available online).

New Quicken authentication with fewer MFA challenges. Free 5GB of online storage for backup files. Extended QIF import to support all account types. Faster category list display.

Where is that. I don't see that either.

Oddly, I just noticed that Quicken thinks I'm running Windows 11 Enterprise. I'm not. It's Windows 11 Pro. Is there any significance to that?

Ok, I found it. All my original three guesses were wrong.

Look at the register row than contains the register balances (Online, Current and Ending) and the number of Transactions. There's an icon in that row (whose "picture" I can not figure out) just to the left of the Ending Balance, with a downward pointing arrow. Clicking on that downward pointing arrow displays the option to "Hide pending transactions" (or "Show pending transactions, if they are currently hidden).

Thanks very much. Quicken did a great job of hiding it from its users.

It's a preview feature. I'm running R43.32. In Preferences/Setup under Early Access Features, there is a setting called:

X Enable pending transactions when available

Problem is that while turning it off temporarily clears the checkmark, when leaving and coming back in, it just comes back on. For me, only the Chase accounts appear have this extra tab. The information is only observable, there is nothing you can do with it.

I don't see a way to get around this forced beta testing.

Take care, John

Yes, I see the additional setting that turns off the pending transactions tab - thanks John for pointing it out. I'm not sure why anyone would want to see pending transactions - these are not real, they just reflect a hold of an arbitrary amount which may or may not match the actual transaction charge. Indeed, a common practice is to place 1.00 pending charges to make sure the account is real which then disappear after a few days.

Interestingly enough, this setting that actually turns off the pending transactions tab has no effect on the Early Access Feature setting.

There's another new icon in that same register row; it's to the left of the Online Balance and looks like a clock with a downward pointing arrow. If the financial institution is incorrectly including pending transactions in the Online Balance, clicking on that downward pointing arrow allows the user to exclude pending transactions from the Online Balance.

It's no longer a preview feature. You're not running the current version.

I think beta testing has pretty much been completed by the time any non-beta user is offered the newest release. If what you're referring to needs a name (and if it should truely be considered "testing"); I believe the name would be "gamma testing".

If you really want to "get around" that "gamma testing":

- set your Windows User Account Control settings to have Windows ask you before it allows apps to make changes

- reject offers by Quicken to update to a new release

- check for new Quicken releases at

[New Quicken releases should not appear at that URL until "gamma testing" is complete. At that time, download the current Patch file and run the downloaded patch file (with Quicken NOT running) to update to the current release. ]

As of right now, it still tells me that version 43.32 is the latest version. From experience, I am concluding that in my environment, there is a problem with R44.20 and so they won't push it out. Trying to force it by manually downloading and installing has caused problems for me in the past and I see from the Quicken Community that there are indeed issues with R44.20. I'll wait...

I was definitely not suggesting that you (or anyone) install a release you're not comfortable with: I certainly don't. [I do have a second pc that I use for testing on which I typically do install the latest release available at the link I previously provided.]

I was just pointing out that you could "get around ... forced beta testing" by not allowing Quicken to automatically install new releases.

Once a new release appears at the link I provided, the "gamma testing" phase has been completed. "Gamma testing" phase here meaning the post-beta, pre-universal-release phase.

[IF you were being sarcastic when referring to "forced beta testing", insinuating that having to deal with software bugs was tantamount to forcing you to be a tester; you would be complaining about an unavoidable reality: no software is without bugs ... because software is designed/written by human beings, who are never perfect. Wishing it otherwise is unrealistic and unhelpful.]

I wasn't making an assumption; just trying to cover all the possibilities. Note that I began my sentence with the word "IF" (in caps) - as in "IF you were being sarcastic ....". If you weren't being sarcastic, all you had to do was ignore the remainder of that paragraph.

Quite right.

An annoyance I endeavored to help you avoid in the future.

And I'm not sure what good reporting annoyances here does. It's pretty much a given that when software features don't work, software users get annoyed. But no one here can do anything about preventing or fixing any of those annoyances. Other users can only (sometimes) help determine whether there really is a problem, whether it is a Quicken problem, and whether there is any existing way to work around it.

No one can prevent software problems, and the only people who can fix them are the developers. The best way to let the Quicken developers know about a problem (or an annoyance, if you prefer), is to use Help > Report a Problem. Sometimes contacting Support can help with insights to fix, or improve, a problem; but I would not count on too much from them (and I don't consider Support as the place to report problems).

Also as I believe you already know, you can initiate a discussion in the Quicken Community to discuss the issues you experience with Quicken. Sometimes such discussions cause Quicken moderators to post an Announcement regarding the reported issue, which often comes with the ability to "subscribe" to the Announcement which will then notify you when it is updated.
