Where is quser.ini in Win 7?

I used a lttle utility called search everything that does a real fast (and indexed) search of file names. Recommended if you are search impaired like me on Vista and Win7, or even XP.

Open Windows Explorer, select Computer and enter your search argument in the Search field on the upper right corner of the screen. This should find it for you.

Redo your search using Windows Explorer. Mine showed up immediately at: C:\Users\--my name--\AppData\Roaming\Intuit\Quicken

Make sure that you are searching the C: drive and NOT the default "Libraries".

It doesn't. That's exactly the search method that does not find it.

It's there all right, but I am still mystified why Windows Explorer Search doesn't find anything on my whole sysytem, much less the C: partition, for "quser". It's an administrator account and it's set to show hidden files.

I had the same result as you. I tried searching for qb*.ini and it missed all of my quickbooks ini files too. Not sure why search failed to find those files.

Finds it for me. Win7 searches are a bit different than previous versions of Windows, you're probably doing it wrong but I don't know what to tell you to do it differently, sorry.

Keep trying, the search DOES work, really!

I have tried it repeatedly on my three computers and it doesn't find it on any of them. here's what I am doing:

First I set the View options to show hidden files and folders. Then I go to Computer in Windows Explorer and type "quser.ini" into the search box in the upper right hand corner.

If you are doing something different than this, let me know. I guess I have been doing it wrong since the day Win 7 appeared.

I even tried qb*.ini and search did not find any ini files.

I would just navigate to the Roaming folder as suggested earlier.

This works fine for me (Win 7, Q10H&B) and I don't even show hidden files and folders.

Are you running as an administrator under the account you used to install Quicken?

Are you waiting long enough for the results to appear? The files in the AppData directories typically aren't indexed and it can take a while to find them.

Do you see a green progress bar slowly creeping across the Address box of the Explorer window? If it doesn't eventually disappear, you might want to Google "green ribbon of death". Disabling thumbnails might help if this is the problem.

You might also try clicking the Windows logo at the bottom left and typing "search" (without the quotes) in the Windows search box. If your Search mechanism isn't damaged you might see several useful Control Panel items. One lets you rebuild the search index, another is a search troubleshooter.

The above is really a hit or miss sample of what can go wrong. You'll probably need help from a Windows expert.

I use Windows XP, but there are two observations I would add to this discussion.

2.) Not only do you need to make sure that the "search" won't exclude files that are hidden, or not display file names with their extensions ... you need to insure that your search includes the folders that contain the file you're looking for.

I also do not understand the overwhelming desire to do what you want to do. I have used Quicken for 10+ years, and I have never noticed, or cared, what was displayed in the "most recently used file" list in Quicken.

Yes, on all 3 systems.

Until the green bar creeps all the way across and then some.

Already tried all those. Apparently others are having the same problem. I can find the file from the location spedified and have edited it to fix my Quicken issue. The failure of the search makes me curious about what else search can't find.

Yes, it is there but Windows Explorer search does not find it. Apparently from some other posts, I'm not the only one. I have this problem on 3 systems, all Win 7 Pro.

I searched from Computer which includes all folders on the system.

I have 4 Quicken data files for different institutions and it's convenient if all are right there and clickable instead of having to look for the right one.

When I needed 2 different Qdata files, I made shortcuts to each to click and start Quicken with either one started. I edited the icon so I could recognize the shortcuts which I had placed on the desktop (that reduces security, of course).

Alternatively, you can use the command shell "dir" command.

Type "cmd" in the Windows search box and hit enter. In the command shell window, type the following:

cd c:\ dir /b/s "quser.ini"

You can also use wildcards:

cd c:\ dir /b/s "qb*.ini"

Does this work for those having problems with Explorer search?

Select "Computer" or "C:" drive.
