Why does the Quicken Server store passwords?

I recently had a problem with PayPal. I had no problem downloading transactions directly into Quicken until I got a PayPal security key. Essentially what it does is generates new 6 digit password every 30 seconds. I figured, no problem I would just not store my password in the password vault and type it in every time. WRONG. When I try to update I get a message telling me that the password my financial institution has does not match the password stored on the Quicken server and I have to click on the link to "update your password in Quicken". This time Quicken has no problem as it now updates ITS password (which I never told it to store) and the password my financial institution has. Anyone know why the Quicken server is storing password?

Have you tried going into the Password Vault and deleting the password for PP there? It should then prompt you each time you do a one-step update for the password to the PayPal site. Just watch the buttons you click on so that you don't accidently save the password.

Yes, I did that and it correctly asks me for the password each time. But then I type in the new password it still complains it doesn't match the password stored on the "server" and I can click a link to update the password on the server. This for some reason is a different location then the Password Vault because I am correctly asked for the password every time. If you want to see how this works, change your password from the bank on their website. Change it in the password vault and you will find the first time you use the password on Quicken you will get an error even though you changed the password in the vault.

When the One step update screen pops up is the option to synch with Quicken.com selected? I wonder if unchecking that option will cure your problem?

Quicken direct connect downloads are 1 day behind the Bank's website. If you make a change on a bank website, you must wait for the overnight transfer from the bank to Quicken's server before you can use the new information. Deposits to my checking account always download 1 day after they appear on the bank's website.

I'm not worried about the information it's just the password that won't work. I'm not being stopped by by financial institution but by the Quicken server. If the password I type in doesn't match their REMOTELY stored password they won't validate or even check with my financial institution to see if the password I typed in is valid. The error DOES give me the option to update that remotely stored password on Quicken at which time it will validate it with the bank and everything works fine (for the next 30 seconds until my password changes again).

It does not sound like Q was designed for a FI that constantly changes its password. It might be easier to just disable the Paypal new 30-sec password feature and go back to the original static password that Q likes.

I think you are right and maybe in the future they will make an adjustment. Fortunately for me I so infrequently use PayPal that it's just as easy to "update my password with Quicken" once a week and keep the security of the key as PayPal is tied to my primary account. Was hoping there was an "easy fix"
