the IRS sent me a huge refund check in error. Of course, I will not deposit it and hang onto it and return it.

My question is: should I send it back now, or wait a week or two to see if the IRS figures this out on their own? How long should I wait before giving up on them finding their own error, and sending it back with my explanation?

You should (or will) receive a notice separate from the check that explains the changes they made. I'd wait on that, a couple of days usually, then based on that information you can reply to them and return the check accordingly. It'll be better to have that notice, along with your reply as to why they are wrong and where to apply the money to, makes for better reading for the lowly IRS employee that gets lucky enough to open your envelope.

I have both the check and the notice. they are wrong. Should I sit on them a few weeks to see if the IRS corrects their error, or should I respond now? It invites a telephone call. Should I write or call, and when?

Call or write, but don't just sit on it thinking things will get better. They won't.

well, calling was an exercise in futility. No humans to be found. I'll write, and return the check. Jeez, feels like I'm paying my taxes twice . . .

I'd pay for a receipt for mailing that check in.
