From the Minn. St Paul Business Journal:

The state first brought up the issue about two weeks ago, saying that Intuit put on hold 11,000 Minnesota tax returns while it fixed the problems, the Star Tribune reported. The state said last month that one problem was ?an error in the political contribution part of the property tax refund return result[ing] in the party designations being mislabeled." At the time, Intuit said it expected to have the problems resolved in a week. Intuit later called the state to notify it of a host problems involving both individual and business tax returns, said Terri Steenblock, assistant commissioner for the Minnesota Department of Revenue in a call with reporters. In some cases, Intuit software was awarding residents higher property tax refunds than they deserved. It also made calculation errors in business tax returns, and in some cases requested that refunds be sent to residents in the mail even though filers chose to receive refunds through direct deposit.

I have been screaming such thoughts for years. The IRS gets all but one income item reported to it which I dutifully report. Why could they not just send me a bill based upon a standard deduction. I can then choose to pay or go through the painful preparation by myself or with the aid of the best available, but still terrible, TurboTax.

My guess is that the CPA lobby is against simplified tax code. I would love to be proven wrong.
