Banks that allow cash/cheque depostis via ATMs?

Which banks/building societies allow cash/cheque deposits via ATMs (cash machines). It seems to me this is not a very widespread facility?

Abbey National although for whatever reason, although the credit hits your account the same day as paying over the counter, access to the money is a working day later. This accounts for both cash and cheque deposits. Assuming this is because the branch staff only empty the paid in deposits in the morning and not the afternoon this may make sense for cheque deposits but for cash deposits it doesn't make sense. They could easily get over this issue completly by emptying the depsoits at the end of the day.

because in general, customers don't like it.

Me for one. I usually pay in several cheques at once and I like to get a rubber stamp on my paying in slip stub to prove they received the cheques. If I paid them in at a night-safe or ATM, I wouldn't have thet proof. If the cheques then get lost or chewed up by some machine, or eaten by the bank's resident rat, I'm stuffed!

You should get a receipt from the machine when you deposit cheques. All deposit envelopes are opened in the presence of two staff. Any discrepency and the customer is informed.

But banks can and do lose the envelope. It is then your word against theirs about what was in it.

HSBC is another and AFAIK they do credit the account and make the money accessible the same day if the cash is put in the machine by 3.30pm

If the bank lost the envelope how would they be able to dispute its contents?

The banks' own rules decide when the money clears. Abbey like to earn an extra days interest over most other banks. I have also talked to Abbey about emptying the deposits at they end of the day - they can't be bothered to make the effort.

They could say they lost it after opening it.

Learned only yesterday that Abbey ATM deposited cheques and cash take one extra day to clear because envelopes are bundled and then sent to a central handling depot, arriving up to 48 hours after the original cheque/cash envelope was deposited in an ATM. No envelopes are opened at branches. Does seem a bit daft really when they could quite easily be handled by branch staff, however, I suspect somebody did a time and effort study and concluded that there would be economies of scale if you had one person sitting in a depot opening envelopes all day compared to a plethora of staff at branches.

How do you figure that out then?
