One of the features of the new Egg Money Mastercard is fee free cash withdrawals (provided the balance is in credit - otherwise you pay interest). However my experience of using this card in ATMs has been very mixed.
I have had no problem obtaining cash from RBS group ATMs (RBS, NatWest, Tesco). However the card was refused by ATMs operated by both the Co-operative Bank and Sainsbury's (HBOS). In the case of the Co-operative Bank I didn't even get as far as entering the PIN before the card was returned. In the case of Sainsbury's, it let me complete all transaction detains, only to tell me that the transaction had been "refused".
When I raised this issue with Egg, I was told that the card would be refused by any bank which didn't accept Mastercard. Well indeed that may be the case, but I'm not convinced that this is the real issue here, as Mastercard is pretty well universally accepted. The Sainsbury's ATM had a sign "all major cards accepted". One presumes that they consider Mastercard to be a "major card"!
Has anybody else had similar experiences with ATMs operated by other banks?
