Barclay ISA mistake - have I lost my 2006 - 2007 allowance?

Hi all

First post here so not sure if this is quite the right group

Basically my wife and I both applied for Cash ISA with Barclays on 28 March with all the correct documentation and cheques for 3000.

Until yesterday we had heard nothing but it is that time of year.

Yesterday my wife had a letter from Barclays saying that they had been unable to open the ISA account because the enclosed cheque was not drawn in her name. In fact it was in my name and payable to Barclays Bank. So in theory they are correct. Barclays have returned her application pack and cheque (drawn on my account)

What has happened is that the guy in the branch where we applied for the ISAs has mixed up all our paperwork up because my wife's application pack that has been returned by Barclay with the cheque from my application, and also my proof of ID papers (passport etc)

Furthermore, I have heard nothing from Barclays and of course the branches were closed today.

So Barclays have messed up and mixed all the paperwork up. Somewhere in their system they have my application along with my wife's ID paperwork and a cheque payable to Barclays Bank drawn in my wife's name. That is unless my rejection letter arrives tomorrow.

So what are my chances if I call the Barclays ISA office tomorrow, if they are open that is, and complain. Can they still open ISAs for the last tax year as the applications were made before 5th April (28th March in fact), or have we lost last years entitlement because of Barclays incompetence?

Any ideas folks?

thanks

So long as the app form and the cheques were dated in the last tax year and barclays can verify that it happened in the last tax year then you should be OK. Dont open any other ISAs this year until you get this sorted out.

(When you ring them I suggest you speak slowly and explain what happened in small bite size logical steps as though you were talking to somebody with a short attention span. Any bank who is told at the beginning of the phone call that their client (my dad) has died and then asks to speak to him requires 'special needs' type handling.)

Just a thought - should not cheques be payable to the customer not the bank?
