How does my bank (NatWest) let me know if a cheque bounces? Do they write, or phone or wait for me to see on a statement?

Ask them, my bank (Abbey) writes to me
Easier and less time consuming to rely of the camaraderie of this NG.
Is that one that you have drawn or that you have presented for payment?
Presented for payment.

They will write to you. The drawee will first write to your bank enclosing the cheque and then your bank will write to you. If the cheque was bounced due to an error on the face of it, i.e. out of date, not signed etc., or because it was stopped or with the answer 'refer to drawer' etc., then you will also get the cheque back and your account will be debited. If the cheque was bounced with the answer 'refer to drawer, please represent' or 'effects not cleared' (sometimes), then your bank will debit your account but will immediately credit it again with the same cheque and send it through the clearing again because it might get paid this time round.
John Thanks for the very full reply. Ken
