C & P card, But not debit?

I found myself in a silly confrontation with a PO counter clerk when she refused to accept a cheque from my g/friend for £58, because she had a bank card which only guarantees £50.

She had to write a new cheque and pay £8 in cash.

The clerk also said that the card was not C & P, and in the ensuing discussion told me that she has a card which she uses to pay for goods, which is Chip and Pin, but is not a debit card. I said that it must then be a credit card, but she said: "No, it's a Visa ???? card. I didn't recognise the card type, but challenged her claim to have a C & P card which is not a debit card, yet can be used to pay for goods.

I shouldn't have been having this argument, I know(!), but does such a card exist?

Where I work they usually let you do the cheque if you provide ID to go with it.

To answer your question perhaps she has one of those prepay VISA cards (like a debit card but you can use it as a VISA CC online etc)

She had her passport with her, and in fact was sending for a renewal!

I wondered about that but it was obviously intrusive to ask too many questions of her.

The post office do not accept credit cards for most things, only debit cards - which may have something to do with the confusion.
