Another classic Natwest manoeuvre... before issuing a new unexpected card (apparently a chip and pin), cancel the old one... £&*$^#£$ cowboys.

Why did they cancel the old one?
I went into a branch and asked them. They couldn't explain why, no note against the account, its in credit with a good history. Even the assistant said it was pants. I can only assume it was a c*ck-up in the system.

I recently got a letter from a bank which said "we'll soon be sending a replacement C&P card - but don't worry, we'll cancel your old card **when we send the new one**" !!
They didn't say exactly when they would be sending it - sometime "this Autumn". So, if they send it on a Monday afternoon and it would be delivered on Wednesday, and I try to use the old card on the Tuesday in-between (not knowing that they've just sent the new card and cancelled the old one), then my old card will be refused!
At least they did (effectively) warn me that (sometime this Autumn) my card could be refused because of their stupid procedure....

How did you know it was 'cancelled' as opposed to magnetically corrupted?
Perhaps someone else cancelled it as a prank or revenge or something! I don't think you need much ID to cancel a card - isn't it made easy so if you're flustered having just had your purse stolen or car/house broken into you can quickly cancel it before it's used?
Because when I tried to use it to withdraw cash with a recipt... no cash but a recipe saying "Transaction refused. Please keep this slip and consult your branch. This card has been cancelled"
True.. or it could have just been someone with finger trouble cancelling someone elses card I guess.
Which bank?
I wonder why it couldn't be as simple as when you use the new card the old one is cancelled?

Ah, this sounds like the machine has cancelledthe card. Having said that, I have never heard of this on a receipt, only something similar to what you say but with the word 'card' replaced with 'transaction'
