Can't seem to get a Credit Card

Feb 03, 2006 19 Replies

Rejected by a few companies I've tried, including Capital One.

UK citizen,

21 years old, No employment history, No previous credit cards, loans or debts, Currently self-employed with £2.5k/month income.

Max I'll use is about £100/month as I already have pre-paid Virtual Visas but these don't work everywhere, so I need a REAL credit card.

I'd appreciate any advice.

Did you ask the bank you have your current account with?

Perhaps you should build some credit history elsewhere first. Get some store cards for example.

It may have something to do with your address, maybe some scally once resided at your address/postcode?

If you've tried a number of companies in quick succession this also reflects negatively on your part, a number of searches will appear on your credit record so if you have no credit history they will see nothing good or bad, just the searches.

If you've got an account with a highstreet bank it's worth asking in there, otherwise it's a case of "computer says no" from the automated systems.

It's also worth asking for your credit record from Experian and Equifax, it's a couple of quid.

Are you on the electoral roll at your address? If not get that sorted.

Check your credit status by contacting these two

What do you need the CC for? Work?

I'll do that, will they look at the balance of the current account? I could move more m> If you've got an account with a highstreet bank it's worth asking in there,

They usually say we'll contact you by post after applying online, and I get a letter 5days later saying no. Does that mean someone is checking my application manually?

I'll do that, thanks for the advice all.

Yes. E.g., Virgin do have a human check, but some companies don't. Try

I tried Virgin yesterday, told I'd get contact by post. It's been

3months since I last tried applying for cards as I don't want a lot of attempts logged to my credit history. Are Vanquis.co.uk worth trying too?

Isn't there a deposit I can make of £2-3k for a £250/month limit card to help?

I'm curious. Didn't you say you had a prepaid card? Why not use something like

? It claims to be accepted anywhere a Mastercard is.

Yes, I have ePassporte.com and Entropay.com prepaid virtual cards but they're not accepted everywhere (though they claim), some sites have their own CC merchant account and have configured to reject these cards based upon the first 6 digits of the CC number (issuing bank). Hence I need a physical non-virtual card for these sites.

I'll sign up to that Cashplus though.

I have just received my Cashplus card but haven't used it yet. They do claim it's accepted everywhere, but I believe it's classed as a debit card. They do claim it's accepted anywhere that accepts Mastercard though.

Bit of a hassle to get one, you need to take some ID to your nearest Cashplus outlet, but there is no credit check whatsoever and I got my card 7 days later. £5 a month but no fee for putting cash on the card or using it for purchases.

How would he get a 'store' card if he cant get a credit card?

Here's a free way of getting some idea of what your credit rating would be and how to improve it. It uses the same style of scoring process as the banks but because you are answering the questions (not equifax) there's no charge. It'll also work out your estimated credit limit.

You should be able to find out what's holding you back.

All I ask is that if you do decide to get another credit card, please check out the American Express one I have advertised :)

Thanks, Michael

No previous credit cards, loans or debts,

** There's your problem right there. In credit referencing terms you don't exist, so now way to know if you're a good bet. Your best shot is to ask whomever you have a current account with. They have some credit history they can look at - the way you've managed your current account - so should be more likely to help you.

That must be why Equifax say they can't help me when I submit my details.

Is this worth paying £39.95 for:

** I've no idea but the first port of call should always be your bank, who know you somewhat. Failing that, try a storecard. You just need to generate some sort of credit footprint.

£40 for an 'information pack'? Smells like a scam to me.

John

An update:

  1. Virgin rejected.
  2. Barclays rejected.
  3. Vanquis accepted, I'm going with them.
  4. I got my credit reports, they were clean, but banks didn't want me probably because I'm self employed.

Thanks for the advice all!

Glad yo got fixed up.

Unlikely that this is the sole reason, more likely to also be length of time at addresses/length of time self employed/ residential status/no other credit as well.
