Cancelling VAT registration

No it isn't. But VAT inspections are often event-driven. A large refund may trigger a VAT inspection and if (say) you've never had an inspection what better event than deregistration to trigger yours?

No, not at all. I'm VAT registered, but not voluntarily, so cancelling is not an option for me :-)

Its just that two people I know recently did exactly that and they both ended up with a visit. I was just wondering whether it was policy or not, but your experience suggests not?
