Car insurance after accident?

My car insurance is up for renewal at the beginning of July and I would have had 4 years no claims had an idiot not crashed into me in December. The claim is still ongoing so therefore I am only actually entitled to 1 year no claim according to DirectLine, my insurer.

They have more than doubled my premium and I am not happy at all. They want almost 1000 for my insurance, a figure I think is very high. Bell Direct gave me a quote for around 850 but does anyone know if there is a cheap insurer for these sort of circumstances?

Also, as DirectLine say I was involved in the accident this year I wont be getting another years disount, and added to the 'punishment' of removing two years NCD anyhow, I have gone from what would be 4 years down to 1. Is this correct?

And if I am splitting hairs do they then therefore have to increase my NCD a year after the accident or will they wait until my renewal date?

Any help much appreciated. Thanks,

Geordie

It's too late now, but surely last year you had the option of protecting your NCD by paying extra? If it were in place, you wouldn't be losing your

4-yr NCD. While premium can go up after a claim, you'd still be entitled to 4-yr discount, which is usually 60%. If Direct Line manage to recoup all the money they've paid out on your claim, they should reinstate your full discount, though the increased basic premium ('loading') will still stand. As you now have only 2-yr worth of NCD (around 40%), nobody else is going to give you more than that, though their basic premium may be less than Direct Line. If you have otherwise standard profiles (job, age, address, driving history, insurance group, use etc), try some online quotes from Hastings Direct, Privilege, B&B, the AA, Tesco and

Not every company hikes up the premium after one claim, though you may face bigger compulsory excess.

then follow up any good ones, remember that some companies do 10% online discount. Also try with various named drivers

Not an answer to your questions, but I was able to reduce my premium substantially within a couple of minutes by using this online search engine:

Seems odd. I am with them and I have 3 years no claims. A few months back some boy racer went into the back of me but they wrote to me straight away to say that my no claims would be unaffected and they were waiving the £600 excess. They still haven't let me know if it was settled or not and I didn't even have any no claims protection.

Presumably they recovered the cost of the damage (including excess) to your car from the boy racer's insurance (since he was at fault) and therefore your claim was a "not at fault" claim.
