Car Insurance Online

Hi

Our car insurance is up for renewal soon so we've been picking up a few leaflets in the supermarkets etc. It seems a discount is generally available if you buy online.

Any recommendations or 'Do's and Dont's' we should know about ?

and use their car insurance calculator. It is the Dail Mail's Financial website and it can search scores of insurances companies for you to get the best quote. I personally found it very good.

Be wary of cheap on line / telephone deals. If they are cheaper then must have cut costs somewhere, and that could be in the claims department. I have just had a terrible experience with a supermarket offering on line insurance. It sometimes pays to go with a broker who will be there when you need them. Hindsight and experience make one a little wiser.

Look up recent Which? magazine (in libraries) which has regular surveys of cheap car insurance. They list several companies that are cheap for a particular category, like low-group car, inner city, aged 50+ etc. Tesco, esure, More than, Churchill among others crop up frequently.

I use E-Sure for both our cars and they are the cheapest for us (in London, both old'ish farts). Only negative thing is that they don't include a green card, so you need to pay extra if you drive abroad on holiday. If not, no problem. They do give free cover for overnight trips, so good for the odd booze cruise.

They also give higher NCD, we are on 73 and 71% currently.

Thanks but that's exactly what we want. We live in a rural area of County Durham with a very small chance of ever having an accident.

The cheaper the better while still being legal.

Thanks for that, we'll see how it goes.

You don't *have* to as all EU insurance must now provide at least minimal cover in all parts of the EU. Thus your evedence of UK insurance is also evidence that you have the minimum legally required insurance in all countries of the EU.

It's well nigh impossible to get an *actual* Green Card nowadays.

This is the attitude I take because I buy cheap cars < £1,500 - I can't see the point of buying cars costing more than say £5,000 these days - and I have a good accident record. I buy the cheapest TP insurance with legal cover, which the insurers seem to subsidise as it makes their lives easier in the event of a claim.

I found that when using this site I only got quotes above what I was paying with Direct Line. Some of the on-line quotes from this site were from companies that I had previous telephoned and received a cheaper quote.

I don't believe that on-line quotes are necessarily cheaper. A few years ago, and when I had an empty house next to me, I rang around to get car insurance quotes. I then entered similar details (different name and the neighbouring address) into the web sites. All on-line quotes were more expensive - it may have only been a few GBP higher but it wasn't 10% that some companies claim. Many had different conditions related to excess payments therefore perhaps a direct comparison cannot be made.
