Card Not Present transactions

When ordering goods over the web etc. that require a delivery address that is different to the card address, am I right in saying that the (normal)card details (number, exp date...) are entered to the retailers terminal and could be accepted if it is below their floor limit, as there is no method of ensuring that the delivery address is the cardholders (registered address) and it is only when the card terminal requires authorisation, that the address is checked (over the phone?) Since there must be many transactions like this. It can only be a few tranactions that are actually checked (manually)? I have noticed that not all websites have the facility for entering the invoicing address, just a delivery address. I am aware that Amex? only allows goods to be delivered to the cardholders address but if the situation is as above, how does it ensure this?

On a similar note, I hate it when ordering online and they set up an account and even more so when they store your card details. Although they are (probably) stored fairly securely. There is no need for details like that to come up on screen when shopping in Index etc. This is virtually an open invitation to fraudulent transactions, since the card details are printed on a piece of paper and put in the till. Any one with a good memory... (or not if its only house no. and post code).

Is it just the house no. and NUMBERS from the postcode? If you took all the house nos and post code numbers in the UK there must be many the same. Especially if they are all mixed up.

Also Asda, supposing your name was Fred Jones, would print at the bottom of the receipt " Thank you for shopping with us F Mr Jones" and yes in the wrong order! I don't know whether they have stopped it now as it wasn't on my receipt from yesterday.

I'm sure they (supermarkets) can't actually store your actual card details without your permission: would the data be changed though? Like card number 12345 means customer A etc. However this wouldn't work for repeat shoppers so what would be the point? I have nothing against them collecting anonymous data.

Yes, but they use the whole postcode. The thing about that is that the postcode already uniquely identifies not only your town and street, but (for long streets) your section of street. Add the house number to that, and they then have your whole address.

Yes you can - but it must be specifically granted, and normally only applies within marketing groups. IE - A Halifax customer can give permission for marketing consent across the HBOS group, or a Barclaycard customer across the Barlcays group etc.

The Credit Card Co. cannot (and would not) just divulge your address willy-nilly, hence the poster's obsrervation that Index had his address must have been gathered independently.

There is absolutely no reason why a store cannot use credit card nos to 'identify' or 'tag' it's customers for marketing purposes, but quite frankly it is silly to do so - - the nos change and many people use more than one card anyway!

It is just the number from the post code so there would be more than one but when you add the name that reduces the chance of duplicates.

I was meaning the credit card company could divulge information to retailers.

I don't think anyone was suggesting that credit card numbers should be used by stores to 'tag' customers - it could be used to link them to the unique identifying number the store used though.

I wasn't really addressing it from that point of view. I have the file definition for all the electronic data that NatWest can send to its clients who use the Visa Purchasing card. The full address of a merchant is not part of that file. All we get is the merchant name and town.

This leads me to suspect that this is all the information the bank collects. If it captured the full address, then presumably it would be included in the file definition.

If the rules for data collection are the same for corporate purchasing cards are the same as for credit cards, then the bank won't have the purchasers full address.

That reminds me..

Back in the day, TSB Speedbank ATMs also used to greet you by name onscreen when you inserted your card. Slightly gratuitously friendly: I'd rather not have strangers in the queue behind me knowing my name..

Now that I happen to have recalled this, I note that their ATMs don't do that any more.

Not necessarily so. Postcode + street number doesn't identify individual flats within a block/tenement/condo etc.. :-(

Which is a right pain for all of us urban dwellers who have to regularly fight with websites using that damned broken address lookup database in order to contort our full and correct address (including flat number) into inflexible online forms, because, without our flat number, mail may end up who knows where within the close... :-(

I had a long hard think about this and remember several years ago (in August

1997 if memory serves me right) I did buy a bed from them which was for home delivery and paid for using my Barclcaycard - that must be when they got my address.
