Credit card - v- washing machine

Hi,

What is the likely effect to a chip and pin card of a 40deg cycle in a washing machine, it managed to wash the black lettering off the embossed lettering, hasn't washed the signiture or CVV off the back of the card however.

Why don't you just try to use it somewhere instead of asking here?

Bitstring , from the wonderful person Chris said

The spec requires it (the chip) to survive worse than that. 85c 85% humidity used to be the standard accelerated life test. 8>.

Sorry for the OT but my new Nokia mobile went half way through a 60 degree wash. After 48 hours of drying out it works lovely again! Trouble is I haven't had a dirty call since ; )

a) cos its a Sunday afternoon b) I have no great desire to spend money for the sake of it

If your answer had been I will be cream crackered, the chip will be filled with water then I would have phoned the bank immediately and request a new one... if I where to have just phoned the bank to ask them the effect of a washing machine cycle I suspect they would simply immediately cancel the old card (regardless of whether it did actually still work) and issue a replacement which would take a week to 10 days to turn up.

No one ever said you had to spend money that you wouldn't have otherwise. But the truth is you won't *really* know until you try it, so it's hard to see much point in asking about it.
