Credit Cards/Chip and Pin/ATM withdrawls

You dont need to. Any main ATM will enable you to change all your PINs irrespective of the card provider.

Well could you please enlighten my banks that this is possible? I'm told I must use the ATM corresponding to that card. And I've even tried using the wrong card in the wrong ATM - the pin functions are just not there.

Doesn't work when I do it - the pin functions section is missing from the menu unless the card belongs to the same bank as the ATM. And all the banks I phoned said to use THEIR atm only.

Why can't I do it over the phone? I can do everything else over the phone, including getting them to repost me the same pin if I forget it.

This is strange. I changed all my cards at an RBS & and HSBC machines. Even the Chip & Pin site says "If you find your PIN hard to remember, you can change it at most cash machines ? just select the ?PIN services? option".

Which cards are you having trouble with?

a) Doing it by phone wouldnt change the PIN which is encrypted on the card.

b) Because then a human being other than yourself will know the number. You will have to tell them

Yes. I've had chip and pin cards for years (even though they still think I need an instruction leaflet all about it every few weeks!!).

Barclaycard for one.

Oh.

It could be done by pressing buttons on the phone - like almost everything is nowadays in phone banking.

Ahh, actually you havent. You have had an old type card with a chip on it. The presence of the chip doesnt mean the card is activated as C&P. It sounds like you may have old cards. My Tesco card, for example, has had a chip on it for years but when I tried to change the PIN @ RBS, (thinking it was already C&P) no Pin option was presented. I rang Tesco who told me the card wasnt C&P and I would be getting one soon. It turned up in due course and looks exactly the same as the old card.

Hmm, how long have you had it?

Fair comment but you would still have problem 'a'.

But surely your whole point was you wanted security. Which you now don't have anymore.

Don't ask me I've never read any.

a) A sentence taking up a whole A4 sheet of paper is only understandable by a lawyer anyway. b) They bore me.

Oh. I'll retry them then.

So what was the other chip for? I never saw it get used.

Make sure they ARE chip & pin cards

I think it was just part of the development and phased implementation.

I think they're probably all replaced by now. Last time I tried the offending cards was a while back.

Can I tell by just looking at one?

So they screwed up and used a different chip?

unless the card belongs to the same bank as the ATM. And all the banks I phoned said to use THEIR atm only.

As others have said, this was probably because they weren't actually chip and pin, even though they had the chip.

including getting them to repost me the same pin if I forget it.

Because then you will be telling somebody else what your PIN is.

menu unless the card belongs to the same bank as the ATM. And all the banks I phoned said to use THEIR atm only.

So someone rewrote the standards. Always bloody happens.

including getting them to repost me the same pin if I forget it.

As I said to someone else, I could tell a computer by pressing numbers on the telephone keypad.

Almost certainly. The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister will attend personally no doubt.
