OK Folks it is time to put my money where my (big) mouth is . The Halifax today reported house price falls of 0.6 % in August,

Which Spread betting firm is based on the Halifax figures and I will gamble some money and you can monitor my fortunes.

So much for free - effing - trade . LOL.

Remember that you have to bet against others. They may already be betting on falls, and you have to decide then whether to bet on larger or smaller falls than they are. The bet isn't necessarily whether the price goes up and down from here.

Remember two things:

  1. This isn't like putting money on a horse. You can lose more than your original stake. If house prices shoot upwards before the crash actually starts, you could lose a lot of money.

  1. They may well have already priced in an expected fall. You will only win if prices fall by more than what they are expecting.

The current IG Index spread based upon the London house price is 220.6 to

225.6 open till Sep 05, last updated at 13:22 today with a change of -1.3.

Don't know who is the source and don't know what is the actual average house price in London. Can anyone offer a site that knows what is the actual average house price in London.

If you have decided house prices will not increase from its current level you could go short at 220.60 with a stop loss of 228.60 at 10 a .1 of a change you stand to lose 800. On the plus side if at the end of Sept 05 the average house price was 200.6 you would have gained 2k.

and how much would that bet cost me up front ?

erm, nothing.

Might be a good idea to read a little more about spread betting first.
