Stamp Duty on Share Purchases

Is the 0.5% stamp duty on share purchases levied just on the price paid for the shares, or on the price paid including brokerage charges?

Just had a response from my bank. Apparently, because share deals are undertaken by the bank as my nominee, and because they seem to operate at arms length from the broker involved, the 0.5% is chargeable by the bank on the total transaction cost, i.e. share cost plus brokerage costs.

Can't quite remember the legalese they gave, but that's the essence of it.

Well, mine charges both Stamp Duty and Brokerage on the price of the shares.
