Missed Credit Card payment - what happens

Aug 10, 2003 11 Replies

Okay, Im stupid. I kept putting it off and then this weekend realised that they needed a payment by the 11th - so I've paid it - but my bank say itll take 3 days from monday (the 11th) until the credit card company recieve the money.

What will happen? Will the credit company put a black mark next to my credit record? Shall I phone then first thing monday to tell them the money is on route?

Aaargh :O)

It wouldnt do any harm.

Its a BarclayCard unfortunately...

So take it into Barclays?

Why not arrange for a monthly direct debit for the minimum payment, and pay the balance by another method? That way you can never miss making a payment by the due date.

Hmm

Just logged on again to the online barclaycard site, and it suggests the next payment is due on 11/08/03 and the minimum amount due is 0.00 - yep,

0.00 !!

so I made a screenshot and will argue the toss if they try and charge me 20 quid :( Its not my fault im lazy, after all.

:O)

Dependant on which credit card company it is, you are unlikely to get a black mark on your credit record for being late with just one payment, however you may well get hit with a fee, of anything up to 25 for late payment

They've given you a payment holiday this month then. They do this from time to time to get more interest out of you.

You'll still get charged interest, but there won't be any penalties or black marks on your credit file.

If anything it might go down on your credit file as a payment 1 month late. which in itself is no biggy,

Each late payment will lessen your credit score, which in a lot of cases will make no difference, assuming you have a high credit score to begin with, but if you were borderline accept, it might have just knocked you into the decline zone. (Assuming they use credit scoring)

If it was me I would phone them to let them know, for my peace of mind.

For future reference, you can pay on-line by debit card.

I wouldn't rely on the system, I know with my RBS card when I paid over the counter the money still took 5 working days to arrive at the card.

BUT If I phone them up and pay by switch they take it as immediate payment.

I came close to this a few months ago- I usually send away a cheque on the last Sunday of the month, but I forgot. A few days later I looked at my statement and realised it was due the next day. I phoned and asked if they would take switch to be told no. I asked if they had any suggestions, to be told I was going to be charged whatever I did- post would take five days, a bank payment would take three. I stuck the cheque in first class post and when the statement came in it had been credited the following day (due date) and I hadn't been charged. Since then I've kept an eye on it and they always seem to credit my payment the day after I post it, though they don't tell you that. So you might be lucky.

James
