money abroad ?

Just read an interesting article in the Sunday times about best way to get foreign money. I've always thought that the overall cheapest way is to use my natwest mastercard at the airport?. But they suggest it isnt-charge interest??. But if I put say 500 in the account and then draw out about

450 worth of the currency is this still a economical way ?. I am travelling to South america so assume my Natwest Debit card won't work??

It should work just fine, although you may need to pretend that it's a credit card if any cash machine were to ask you that question.

Open a Nationwide Flex account. Its Visa debit card can be used worldwide, with no currency loading (usually 2.75%) and no cash withdrawal fee (1.5-2%), saving at least 4.25% over your Natwest card. You normally get rates very close to interbank rates on Ceefax page 241 and financial pages. You can open online and just present ID at a local branch. Card and cheque book by post in about 10 days.
