nationwide internet banking

That brings back memories! There was a special tone pad they gave you for a £10 deposit, but then the pads became smaller and better and generally available for a few quid, and I returned mine and got the deposit back. :-) Then came tone pad phones.....

Can someone explain this fuss about ATMs? If I go to a bank I don't bank with and ask to take some money out, it seems perfectly reasonable that I should get charged for this service. If I live somewhere where there is no bank at all, then presumably there is nothing to spend money on, so I can just get money when I next visit a town, or get a cashback from a supermarket or something.

I'm entirely satisfied with Nationwide. They always respond promptly to my secure messages, and I've had no problems with logging into their online service - except on occasions when I have had finger trouble. (If you want to see the digits you entered rather than asterisks, install Firefox.) Their integration with Microsoft Money is the best available from any bank or building society.

I did once have a card cancelled and replaced - by Goldfish - because a UK online retailer had been hacked and card details stolen. No doubt if I had been abroad at the time, this would have caused problems, but you can't really blame the card issuer in that case.

Unfortunately all centres tend to be staffed by disinterested monkeys who are paid on the basis of the number of calls they process, rather than the success of the outcome. If possible, always try to resolve issues online. That way you are more likely to get somebody decent responding. And don't expect a prompt response to a letter. It could get lost in the post, or mis-directed at their end.

Finally, I doubt very much that Nationwide becoming a PLC would lead to any improvement. They would then operate in the interests of the shareholders rather than their members (sorry, customers).
