Natwest - charge....

Hi I posted out a cheque which was cashed in and it took be over my overdraft limit (not a HUGE problem because it was for a parking fine and if they had rejected the cheque a) natwets woulda charged me for a bouncing cheque b) i probably woulda had to pay more for the fine

however, i got a letter through the other day telling me i would be charge

30 (as expected) but balance on the account is again near the OD limit - if they charge me that 30 charge and put me over my limit will I get charged ANOTHER charge for going over the limit?

Also why do they sometimes reject transactions when you have a 0 balance (or reached your limit) and sometimes let them go through?

I asked the lady at Natwest once and she said it just happens...is there any way of forcing them to refuse any transactions when I hit my limi?

No

This decision is at the bank's discretion according to your risk banding, the nature and size of the payment, your account history and existing facilities.

Keep writing bad cheques and they will begin to do that anyway. Of course they could instruct you to bank elsewhere at the same time........

you reckon? thats how banks make a chunk of their profit (charges like this)

Actually, the income generated from paid referral and unpaid fees is marginal - the true profit for retail banking is from credit and debit balances. Turst me - portfolio income is completely unaffected by a few unpaids, whereas the loss of even 25000 savings can hurt in a P&L perspective!
