Payment question

Today I paid some money into my NatWest account - some cash and a cheque. NatWest state that money paid in before 3.30pm should be available by the end of the day. Mine isn't!

The question is, as I paid cheques in on the same paying-in form as cash, will I have to wait for the cheques to clear before I can use the cash? Or will their system do the cash and the cheques separately even though they were on the same form?

Thanks Matt Wood

No, their system will only do this if you use two separate paying-in slips, one for the cash, and one for the cheques.

Two months ago I went to pay in a wad of cash and a cheque, using a single slip, and the teller advised me that the cash would be delayed to hit the account at the same time as the cheque, and she suggested that I split the transaction into two, by amending the existing slip to delete the cheque from it, and making out a new one for the cheque only. So I did, and it worked.

No (assuming you paid them in at your own branch).

Yes. Cash and cheques and pay-in slips are separated at birth, as it were, and make their own ways round the banking systems. The system can handle cleared and uncleared funds on the same pay in slip. Again this assumes you paid in at the branch at which you bank. Same day, pan bank, cleared creditting is being introduced though.

This will be because you paying in at a branch other than your own.

Indeed I was. In fact, within walking distance of home, I have a choice of two branches of my bank, neither of which is my own even though one of them used to be. My own is bloody miles away, and for no better reason than inter-branch rivalry. When I gave my first mortgage, my FA had some sort of deal with the manager of this other branch, and part of the deal for getting the loan was that he got to poach me from my then previous branch. Weird.
