prepaid credit card

I've heard about things called prepaid credit cards; does that mean you charge up your credit card account and then use it? I haven't stayed in the UK long enough to get a credit card--it's potentially very useful to me. Do they charge any extra fees compared to normal credit cards? Where are the offered?

cashplus.co.uk

Charge it up at post offices, places with bill payment terminals etc. Costs £4.95 per month or I think you can opt to pay per transaction.

9.95 to buy one. 4.95 per month fixed charge. Load money onto it via cash at post office (cleared next day) Or transfer from an account to the card (clears in a few days) There are charges for taking cash out via atm so be sure to check the terms etc.

Works well for me.

Hmm, not only you don't get the short interest-free credit period, you also pay a monthly charge on them. And they use debit not credit card system payments--not good for me. Never mind but thanks a lot,

Of course you don't get any credit, they're prepay.

You'll need to have a UK Passport or Driving Licence for most of them...

YES IT DOES... IT ASKED FOR A PASSPORT OR DRIVING LICENCE NUMBER

You are correct. all banks etc need this sort of ID from applicants to comply with money laundering laws.

Except 360money.com, you don't need any form of ID to get one of their cards.

This is from 360com FAQ:

Will I require any ID to complete my Premium card application? Yes. When you apply for your 360money Premium card, we will require your name and full address with a valid postcode in order to carry out online identity verification. This is a regulatory requirement and we have the right to decline an application if your personal details do not pass the identity check or fail to match our postal address database. We will use external verification agencies to confirm your address as part of our commitment to prevent fraud. We may also ask you to supply additional proof of identification.

I expect they check electoral roll first then go on to ask for a paaport or driving licence.

I have purchased 4 cards from them, there were no ID checks and I can also confirm there are no matching names on the electoral roll.

I got one of those and wasn't asked for anything like that... Got mine yesterday, applyed for it last Sunday.

I find that amazing considering how much agro it is to open a bank account to credit card without them quoting the money laudering rules about id etc.

Best of luck to you if you got away with it.

(hope its not a usa company thats connected to enron otherwise the fbi will be dropping by to extradite you! lol)

Yes but remember it's not a credit card or a bank account. It's a prepay card which is topped up by paying cash at a Paypoint station. No real difference to a prepay mobile, you load it with cash and spend it.

I don't think you can top up the card without having the card in your possession either, (you don't get a separate topup/load card like you get with cashplus.

This might be an important difference, for reasons I probably shouldn't suggest here, but one obvious one is I can't take a cheque off you for example and pay it onto my card (avoiding a bank a/c).

Hmm...there's someone at my door.... :-)

I can now see the difference and why its requires less fuss.

I wonder why they make the statement about it though. Maybe to cover themselves in the eyes of the law.

Dont reply to this if its inconvenient whilst chained and shackled! lol

Perhaps they're going to change things soon. Hmm, I might order a few more... :-)

These orange jump suits are pretty hot it this weather. :-)
