Nationwide Sort codes do not identify the branch.

That Sort Code is the only one for that type of account, Nationwide likes to stick to one Sort Code for each type of account.

unlike other banks.

And Barclays are losing their geographical location. My account is with a small town branch (yate) but the sort code is for a regional office (Bristol).

Their Head Office. The branch could be anywhere in the UK.

Thats because as far as banking goes (not being a clearing bank) they only have one branch, i.e. head office. All the accounts are maintained there.

Barclays have been consolidating their processing network and branches, as individual accounting entities, are closing, just leaving sub offices of the local processing centre.

Most other banks are also doing this but are retaining the old sorting codes.

Yes, but not being a clearing bank, they have to have their cheques cleared by another bank and therefore it can take longer before you can access the cash.

*think* they use a clearing agent.
