Strange letter from (UK) Volvo Owners Insurance

Oh Yes They Do! If one party breaches a contract, this does not give the other party the right to breach or rescind it. However, if one of the terms of the contract is that non-payment allows them to cease cover by cancelling the policy, then exercising that option does not amount to "dishonouring" the contract.

I doubt it, except to the extent that you could be forced to pay for the cover for the short period for which it was actually provided, i.e. from renewal to cancellation, perhaps with a reasonable amount added on for admin.

What makes you think that *they* don't need to honour it, but *you* do?

So, I take it you wrote to them to cancel the continuous authority? [And, of course, kept a copy...]

So, what *did* "Visa" say when you showed them that "new information" - the letter showing that you had cancelled your authority with the "crooks"?

The contract is until the renewal date.

Unless there is prior acceptance of a default renewal policy, why would they be 'required' to continue the cover and why would you be liable for further payment?

Indeed! I've now logged a formal written (well, email anyway) complaint about the tone of the threatening letter which they sent me - and have warned them that if I don't get a satisfactory reply within the 8 week period stated in their complaints procedure, I shall be "obliged" (echoing their words!) to refer the matter to the Financial Services Ombudsman.

Watch this space!

You seem to support Visa moronic actions (follow the rules until you recieve a form) - I can't help that

I don't need a letter/proof/evidence to avoid spending *my* money on anyone - i just need an 'inkling' - i certainly won't give them the opportunity to take £5000 out of my wallet whilst i write a letter - that's plain common-sense! - likewise i expect my 'wallet representative' to close my wallet whenever i ask them to - for whatever reason i see fit - You too I assume?

Of course any business is entitled to act as foolishly as it wants

Well, there's an inevitability when drawing any analogy, which is that some aspects will necessarily be different. The question is whether they significant enough to invalidate the argument?

If you want to convince me that a side-effect of all those extra rules is that I can be put in a situation where I am required to take evasive action to avoid buying something which I haven't consented to buy, then go ahead and try.

But you'll need to be a little less coy about it.
