Tesco Credit Card

Just a warning to anyone who has applied for one of these recently. All the promotional literature and the Tesco website clearly states an introductory interest rate of 0% on purchases until August 2005, and this was quoted on my credit agreement.

However, when I received the card, the attached letter stated 0% until March

2005. Thinking it was a simple error I called "customer services" and was told March 2005 was correct. The call centre droid said they only ever offered 0% for the first six months, so March was correct (account opened beginning of October). After much head banging against brick walls she told me I would have to send them proof that I had been offered 0% until August! I was incredulous at this, and quite frankly couldn't be bothered.

So I called again a week later hoping to speak to someone with more sense, only to be told exactly the same crap. I suggested that if she cared to pop down to her local Tesco or look on the website she would see the offer for herself. All she could muster was "well, unfortunately the system says March". After I refused to accept this she said she would contact marketing to see if there had been an error updating the system. She called me back to say marketing had told her the offer was *available* until August 2005, but that it only applied to any account for the first six months. This is utter bollocks. I couldn't get anywhere, so have just had to write a letter of complaint, sending photocopies of the credit agreement and other documentation that they sent me in the first place.

It really pisses me off having to waste my time dealing with such clowns, and if anyone has taken up the same offer I would suggest you make sure that you are getting the introductory rate you signed up to.

Helen.

You have signed a legal contract in the credit agreement. The letter is not.

Personally I wouldn't let them control the complaints process and would instead complain to Trading Standards in Tesco Finances home town - snipped-for-privacy@southend.gov.uk

The web site is quite clear -

"A great low rate and a fantastic balance transfer offer!

  • 0% fixed for all purchases until 1st August 2005, thereafter
14.9% typical APR (variable). * 4.8% p.a. on all balance transfers made in the first 6 months* - fixed until transfer paid off! *Balance transfers made after the first 6 months will be charged at our standard variable rate of 14% p.a.

Hope they pay you some compensation !
