Time needed for paying UK bills?

I have a few questions for you specialists about the time it takes for bill payments to be received in the UK.

I had to pay some domestic bills and I had to have the money received by the other party as soon as possible. Which is the best way?

I thought that paying by cash at a bank (along with the bank giro credit slip from the bill) was the fastest way to get the money to the recipient. But my someone at the bank suggested that cash was in fact no quicker than a cheque!

Is this true? If it is true then:

Does it make a difference if the cheque is from the bank I pay the money into?

Maybe it makes a difference if the bank I go to is the same one as the recipient uses?

What about time of day. Do all payments for bills (including cash) need to be made before 3:30 pm in order to enter that day's processing or are there ways to pay later and still get into that day's processing?

The quickest way is probably to phone them up and ask to pay with a debit card, I should think.

It depends a bit whether they want to get the actual money or if they want to see your 'intent to pay'.

If the first then deliver a wodge of cash by hand! :-)

However in reality it's often quickest to post a cheque, it will take them some time to clear it but the fact of actually having a cheque in their hands is often what is required.

When you pay the sum in at a particluar bank branch it takes a few days to "clear" which means to get tranferred from the bank of the person you are paying.

Yes. It will take a few days, usually three working days.

Yes. It will reach the recipient's account quicker but the funds may not be release for three working days. The time varies from bank to bank.

Yes. The only way to do it in a quicker time is to do it electrionically but this may cost you.
