Tax Code Changes - 461L -> 446L

Hello -

I'm hoping someone can help me. My payslips from work have changed tax codes - I have been on 461L for quite some time, but just noticed it now says 446L ... what is the difference between these two codes? Is it just a renaming of the same one, or am I gettning taxed more/less after the last budget?

I'd really appreicate any insights into this - I've tried reading up on the web, but am totally confused!

Thanks! David

Your tax free allowances has gone down by about 150/year (so you are paying slightly more tax)

If you want a proper/full explanation - ask your tax office

You're paying more tax. Adding a 9 to the number gives the amount you get tax free, so your tax free allowance has gone down from 4619 to 4469. Your tax office should have set you a coding notice when they changed it explaining why. Have you started getting a taxable perk at work like medical insurance etc?

the lower number means that you are paying slightly more tax. Dunno why it might have gone down (there are lots of possible reasons).

The number is the amount of 'tax free' pay that you can receive in the year divided by 10, so 461 means that you are entitled to between 4610 and 4619 pounds tax free (the tax calculations always assume the top figure for everyone).

461 was the basic allowance for 2003-4. 475 is the basic allowance for 2004-5 and the *must* be a reason why your's is not this.

The L says that your are a 'normal' tax payer (it used to mean that you were single but in the current era every 'normal' taxpayer is now an 'L')

The "normal" code for 2004-05 is 474L (Personal allowance = 4745).

You have a reduction in your code for approx 280 worth of allowances (in cash terms this is 61.60 if you're a basic rate taxpayer) as there were no deductions for the year ending 5th April 2004 this indicates it's possibly an underpayment from a previous year or you have started to receive a company benefit e.g. medical benefit. I would have a chat with your local office, if you're not sure which one call 0845 302 1414 and ask.

If your code number changed, you should have a notice of coding, which should tell you how the allowances have been worked out, and what the deductions are. If you didn't get one, ask for a copy.
