Bar Code - Need Help Using the Manufactures Barcode

I'm opening a new retail business and would like to use the Manufactures bar code on many of my items......but for the life of me I can't figure out how to load the information into my system. I've serched the HELP screens, but no answers.

I'm desperate - Can anyone guide me on how to do this?

Sincere, thanks to anyone who can help :)

If using the UPC as your ILC doesn't work, you can add the UPC codes to the Alias tab of the Item Properties. Then if you're searching for WIDGET you don't need to memorize the UPC codes.

Hi Monica,

if you set up the item lookup as the barcode this should do the trick, or you can take your scanner and when you scan the item while > I'm opening a new retail business and would like to use the Manufactures bar

Thank you both for your help. I had already assigned item numbers, so I chose to use the alias method for identifying the manufactures bar code....and it worked :)

Can you think of any down side to doing it this way, as opposed to using the manufactures item number?

No downside from my POV. Just make sure that the mfr # is in the reorder # field of the supplier tab if you plan to use purchase orders.

I've investigated using the ailias system for manufacturers barcodes - the only downside i have found is that the alias is available on far fewer reports than the ILC, so as Terrible Tom says - make sure you make items identifiable with re-order codes etc! Its harder to filter and arrange your data according to alias than it is ILC. This may not be a problem in your scenario, but i opted to use the ILC for the barcodes on all items, and use an alias only if i need an additional way of identifying an item!

We were instructed to make up a distinctive sequential item number for each item as we set it up, then replace it by scanning the bar code label with the item's general window open in Op Mgr. The scan immediately replaces the temporary item numnber with the bar code digits.

Are there any negatives to doing it this way?

We are using one of the ITEM CAPTION slots for the UPC code. I set this up in CONFIGURATION section. I am also putting the MANUFACTURER'S item # here because we buy things from many distributors and we want to make sure it is the exact same item when comparing prices.

Is this bad?

It may not be too late to change......
